Gemini Space Station shares jumped more than 20% in Friday premarket trading after Winklevoss Capital Fund acquired $100 million in stock at $14 per share - well above Thursday's $5.26 close - while the exchange posted a narrower-than-expected Q1 loss.

The Winklevoss brothers have injected $100 million into their own firm. Winklevoss Capital Fund, the investment arm controlled by Gemini Space Station co-founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, finalized a private placement on Thursday for 7,142,857 Class A shares priced at $14 apiece.

This transaction price exceeds Gemini's Thursday Nasdaq close of $5.26 by over 2.5 times.

Investors responded positively as intended. The stock climbed more than 20% in Friday premarket after the announcement, bolstered by Q1 results that surpassed estimates for revenue and narrowed losses.

Revenue reached $50.3 million, a 42% increase year-over-year and ahead of the $47.9 million FactSet consensus, with earnings per share at a loss of 93 cents against expectations of $1.03. Though still unprofitable for a public exchange, these figures aligned well with the founders' display of faith in the business.

The deal's mechanics stand out. The Winklevoss fund settled the $100 million entirely in bitcoin, delivering roughly 1,258 BTC to Gemini's balance sheet at the set valuation.

This move equips Gemini with a bitcoin-backed treasury and, on a cash-equivalent basis, bolsters a balance sheet strained by prior losses. It also conveys the founders' view of the stock's true bottom, unlike a buyback at the market's $5.26 level.

In comments tied to the placement, Tyler Winklevoss stated the market has "significantly undervalued Gemini" and highlighted "several major product and regulatory milestones that position us well to evolve from a crypto company into a markets company."

This narrative mirrors Coinbase's long-standing pitch: publicly traded crypto platforms should be seen as versatile multi-asset hubs originating in cryptocurrency trading.

Yet the numbers tell a tougher story. Gemini launched its IPO in September 2025 at $28 per share, achieving a $3.3 billion valuation and raising $425 million.

Eight months on, through much of 2026, shares have lingered below the IPO level, with Thursday's $5.26 close implying just one-fifth of the debut valuation. The Q1 2026 earnings follow pre-IPO reports of a $159 million loss in 2024 and $283 million in the first half of 2025.

In this context, the founders' investment serves dual purposes. It provides fresh capital while explicitly betting - via payment in Gemini's core asset - that the exchange's worth aligns nearer its IPO value than recent trading levels. The market's verdict will unfold over coming quarters.

Coinbase, the closest peer, went public in 2021 and has oscillated between extended discounts to its listing price and brief premiums. Gemini's post-IPO decline has been swifter and deeper.

Gemini counters with execution highlights: over $21 billion in customer assets at IPO, expanded institutional offerings, and a compliance-focused U.S. regulatory stance. So far, none have earned a market premium.

Friday's action nudges shares away from lows but leaves big issues unresolved: whether losses are trending toward breakeven, if the product lineup can escape pure crypto-exchange comparisons, and how to finance a shift to a broader "markets company" without more share issuance.

The deal further links Gemini's finances to bitcoin's price - unlike Coinbase. Post-Friday buyers of GEMI shares are indirectly acquiring exposure to that bitcoin holding as well.
