Wii Sports occupies a notable spot in Nintendo history. It ranks as the top-selling software release from the company, one that influenced culture in unexpected manners, and its performance aided Nintendo recovery following years of gradual slowdown. The title also launched one of the firm's most steady and understated series. Later sports entries from Nintendo did not match the original sales figures, yet they have turned into regular releases for every new system, similar to fresh Mario Kart or Pokémon games. The Switch 2 now features its own edition, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, and it stands as the strongest entry to date.

It would be understandable to overlook the launch of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort this week. The release arrives amid a busy schedule of new video game titles, positioned between prominent Switch 2 offerings such as Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave and the forthcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. With so much attention elsewhere, a title focused on thumb wrestling and bowling can easily fade from view. Still, Sports Resort offers a polished and broader take on the idea, one likely to remain a staple throughout the Switch 2 lifespan.

The foundation stays consistent with prior versions: players receive several physical activities that call for motion controls. Swinging a Joy-Con mimics a tennis racket swing or a bowling toss. Twelve activities appear in total, showing clear variety. Returning options like tennis and bowling sit alongside skateboarding, thumb wrestling, and piloting a plane.

Simplicity drives the appeal. Nearly every activity proves straightforward to learn. Even without golf knowledge, the basics of a club swing via Joy-Con came quickly. This design suits an arcade approach, ideal for group play when visitors arrive. Thumb wrestling fits perfectly here. The action stays basic, with hand movement and one button press to pin an opponent, yet it grows tense and enjoyable in two-player matches. Unlike real thumb wrestling, cheating proves impossible.

A few activities stray from the easy pattern. Basketball still feels somewhat intricate, and table tennis strategy remains elusive. With so many options available, most players will discover several preferred games to revisit, so a couple of weaker entries do not detract much. Depth exists too, both in skill mastery, such as hours spent refining bowling spin, and in extra modes per sport. Bowling includes the option for 100 pins simultaneously, which creates the expected chaos.

The major new feature places the action in an open world. While unusual for an arcade collection, this setting supports three fresh activities built around island exploration. Prop plane lets players hold the Joy-Con like a paper airplane, power cruising uses two Joy-Con like Jet Ski handles, and skateboarding relies on mouse controls for a small board. Competitive options exist, such as skateboard races, yet sightseeing mode proves most engaging, with a five-minute limit to locate landmarks and secrets. It resembles an expanded free roam from Mario Kart World. The island offers rich detail with caves and hidden routes, and the three travel methods cover land, water, and air.

These exploration modes bring a fresh layer that blends well with standard sports while providing a distinct feel. Skateboarding stands out for the satisfying pull-back motion on the Joy-Con, and item collection allows purchases of new outfits and accessories for character customization.

Consistency has fueled Nintendo success in the Switch period. Despite industry challenges, the company has maintained regular releases, many with extended appeal. Its biggest titles sometimes surprise, as the first Nintendo Switch Sports exceeded 18 million copies sold and surpassed games like Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Splatoon 3.

Just over a year into the new console cycle, this type of enduring seller fits what the Switch 2 requires, a game often bought alongside Mario Kart at purchase. Wii Sports demonstrated the impact such a title can have, and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort continues that approach.
