Honor revealed its distinctive Robot Phone during this year's Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona. Built into this standard Android device is a motorized camera component that extends outward, giving the handset capabilities similar to a DJI Osmo Pocket model. With guidance from cinema specialist Arri on color science and overall image character, the device looks set to deliver strong results for content creators including myself.

The handset is slated for a China debut this fall, though Honor has already demonstrated it at the Cannes Film Festival and captured behind-the-scenes material at the Shanghai International Film Festival. I have not yet had an opportunity to use it for filming, but I am keen for that to happen given my strong interest.

With 15 years of experience as a CNET technology writer plus extensive photography work across the UK and Europe, I also produce and edit videos for my own photography-focused YouTube channel. Managing both stills and video gear while traveling can be demanding, especially when additional stabilization equipment is required.

I aim for cinematic quality in my videos and therefore carry multiple mirrorless bodies along with various lenses. Acquiring an Osmo Pocket 3 proved valuable because its compact form allowed stabilized footage without extra bulk. Newer options such as the Osmo Pocket 4 and the Insta360 Luna Ultra offer further improvements, yet these standalone units remain somewhat cumbersome to carry daily and feature smaller preview screens plus slower file transfers.

Honor's Robot Phone could address several of those limitations. Because it would replace my everyday smartphone, the device would stay readily available without a separate decision to pack it. The retractable module sits flush inside the body, avoiding noticeable pocket bulge, while the large phone display would simplify monitoring and playback. Android integration would also allow quick uploads to cloud storage or directly to YouTube.

Honor has partnered with Arri, known for professional motion-picture cameras, to refine the imaging pipeline. Arri's leadership noted the intent to deliver natural color rendition, smooth highlight transitions, and authentic depth that suits storytelling.

This approach is welcome because many current Android phones apply heavy processing that can appear artificial. Comparable collaborations, such as Xiaomi's work with Leica, have produced impressive results, and I hope Arri's expertise will steer Honor toward imagery that meets creator expectations.

Although the phone has appeared at international film events, public availability begins in China this fall. That timeline requires patience on my part until hands-on testing becomes possible.
