WhatsApp already provides channel admins with the ability to mark sponsored posts using a paid partnership tag, a capability that began appearing on Android and iOS devices last month. The service is now preparing a comparable option designed specifically for content produced by AI systems. This addition aims to ensure followers can easily distinguish between media captured by a camera and material generated through artificial intelligence applications.

How will the new AI label work?

WaBetaInfo discovered the upcoming capability within the latest WhatsApp beta release for Android, version 2.26.31.1, which is accessible via the Google Play Store. After the feature becomes available, administrators will be able to press and hold an update that includes AI-created media. This action will display a context menu featuring a new option labeled Add AI content label.

Selecting the option attaches a visible indicator to the message bubble, allowing followers to recognize the artificial origin of the material immediately. After the tag is applied, administrators will probably be unable to delete it, making it important to verify the content before distribution.

Not every type of message requires the indicator. Standard text updates, including those composed with WhatsApp's built-in Writing Help feature, appear to fall outside this requirement.

Why do admins need this AI label?

The update supports more than responsible platform use. Multiple nations have introduced regulations mandating disclosure of AI-produced media, and the new tag offers administrators an uncomplicated method to meet these obligations. The requirement applies equally regardless of the tool employed, whether Meta AI, ChatGPT, Gemini, or any alternative system.

The capability remains under development in the Android beta program, and testers currently lack access to it. WhatsApp is simultaneously preparing an iOS version of the same label, ensuring the function will not remain limited to one operating system. No official schedule for wider availability has been announced yet.
