India's internet users frequently turn to voice notes, voice search, and multilingual chats. Converting these behaviors into a viable AI enterprise proves tough due to linguistic diversity, code-switching, and inconsistent revenue streams. Wispr Flow sees the potential outweighing the obstacles.

The startup, based in the Bay Area and focused on AI-driven voice input tools, identifies India as its quickest-expanding market. Voice AI remains nascent and scattered in this South Asian powerhouse. This surge has spurred Wispr Flow to intensify efforts for Indian audiences, starting with Hinglish - the prevalent Hindi-English blend. Future plans include wider multilingual capabilities, local talent acquisition, and reduced prices to reach beyond professionals into everyday homes.

Past voice tech in India, like virtual assistants and WhatsApp audio clips, centered on ease. Now, AI innovators like Wispr Flow aim to leverage generative models to evolve these into foundational computing paradigms.

To better suit Indians, Wispr Flow tested a Hinglish voice model in beta this year and rolled out on Android - India's leading mobile OS - after initial Mac and Windows releases, followed by iOS in 2025.

Co-founder and CEO Tanay Kothari shared with TechCrunch that early Indian adopters were mainly office workers like managers and developers, but usage is broadening to students and seniors introduced by relatives.

India ranks as Wispr Flow's second-biggest market after the U.S. in users and earnings, per Kothari, with momentum building after targeted initiatives. Hinglish integration has fueled faster uptake, tapping into Indians' habit of blending Hindi and English in casual talk, especially shifting from professional to personal interactions.

"People are increasingly applying it in personal applications," Kothari noted, highlighting WhatsApp and social platforms where language toggles are routine.

In India, Wispr Flow's monthly growth hit about 60% earlier this year, jumping to roughly 100% post-launch efforts. Last month brought a major promo wave, featuring Kothari's video and Bengaluru ground events to attract everyday consumers.

Wispr Flow aims to enhance multilingual features within 12 months, enabling seamless switches between English and more Indian tongues past Hindi. In December, it set India-tailored rates at ₹320 (about $3.4) monthly for yearly subs, far below the global $12 standard.

Long-term, prices could drop to ₹10-20 (10-20 cents) monthly to penetrate non-urban, non-elite segments.

"Our goal is for every Indian to access Wispr Flow - that's the vision we're pursuing," Kothari affirmed. "It will unfold gradually but surely."

This year, Wispr Flow onboarded Nimisha Mehta to head India ops for deeper roots. Kothari revealed plans for 30 local staff in the coming year, spanning consumer outreach, alliances, enterprise, plus engineering and support. Globally, it employs around 60.

India’s voice AI challenge

Wispr Flow isn't solo in eyeing India for voice AI. Firms like ElevenLabs have long flagged it as vital. Indian players such as Gnani.ai, Smallest AI, and Bolna keep drawing funds as voice tools proliferate in consumer and enterprise realms.

Still, mainstreaming voice AI in India stays daunting amid startup and investor buzz.

"India tests voice AI to its limits," said Neil Shah, Counterpoint Research VP, citing ongoing issues with languages, accents, and contexts impeding mass appeal.

Sensor Tower data given to TechCrunch shows over 2.5 million global Wispr Flow downloads from October 2025 to April 2026, India at 14% - second to the U.S. Yet, India generated just 2% of in-app revenue then. Globally, it's desktop-centric.

In India, usage splits evenly between desktop and mobile, versus 80:20 desktop skew in the U.S., Kothari said.

He touted high retention at 70% after a year worldwide and in India, backed by two full-time linguistics doctorates honing multilingual models and Indian language mixes.
