Spending time in online synthesizer forums or viewing numerous videos on synth topics reveals a surge in custom firmware for hardware synthesizers, samplers, and grooveboxes. Almost every one of these projects owes its existence to advanced vibe coding resources.

Such custom firmware projects were uncommon before the rise of large language models and typically demanded extensive knowledge plus significant time commitments. Adding even basic functions like velocity sensitivity to a Korg Volca once required weeks or months of effort. Today, hobbyist developers can convert inexpensive Temu instruments into complete grooveboxes within days.

Elektron's affordable Model:Cycles, Digitone, Octatrack, and Digitakt models have received expanded features through assistance from Claude. Roland's SP-404 MKII, Ableton's Push 3 and Move, Akai's MPC Live and MPC One, along with the older MPC 2000, Novation's Circuit, Arturia's MicroFreak, and even Zoom's 14-year-old Multistomp pedal series have all received new custom firmware in recent weeks.

At the forefront stands a compact 70-dollar Yamaha DX-7 replica known as the M-Vave FM-1. It was already gaining traction as a top synth choice this season. Its low cost and accurate FM sound reproduction appealed strongly to newcomers, enthusiasts, and online influencers. Naturally, users began exploring the hardware's full potential, and AI support ignited a wave of rapid development.

The FM-1 currently offers dozens of custom firmware options. Several leading versions, including Felucca, Sloop, and x0x, credit Claude on their GitHub repositories or note explicit AI involvement. Baudgirl is also believed to involve AI assistance, though the creator did not respond to inquiries.

What began as a capable yet simple DX-7 copy now includes multiple synthesis engines such as virtual analog, sample playback, multi-track sequencing, and varied interface styles.

It comes as little surprise that owners would experiment with a low-cost Temu synth despite potential risks. Most devices benefiting from this wave of AI-assisted firmware tend to be older or budget-oriented models.

Roman Rusinov, known on Reddit as themanro and releasing music as Farlow, focused on the Zoom MS-70CDR. This affordable multi-effects pedal from 2012 is known for strong performance and remains popular in budget synth setups. He began by studying ZDL, a project that decoded the Multistomp format to enable custom effects. He later enabled NAM A2 Lite captures and custom impulse responses, converting the unit into a capable modeler for vintage amplifiers.

"I was already applying AI to professional tasks and saw this as an ideal opportunity to explore vibe-coding basics while advancing a project," he explained to The Verge. "It involved considerable trial and error to identify hardware and software constraints." He expressed enthusiasm about joining a wider effort. "It aligned well with other initiatives expanding older hardware and giving it fresh purpose. I appreciate that," he noted. "Owners should have full freedom to modify their equipment as desired."

18nelli, creator of Modded Cycles, shared similar goals of refreshing underused gear. "I owned an Elektron Model:Cycles that left me dissatisfied," he shared with The Verge. He felt it was intended "primarily to encourage purchases of higher-end products." Recent AI progress convinced him he could enhance the groovebox, which had not received an official update since May 2021.

He disassembled his Cycles, recorded all components, and collaborated with Claude Code to add his initial modification: six-track audio over USB. This effort grew into a community initiative featuring contributions from others, several independent custom firmwares, and even the option to convert a Model:Cycles into a Model:Samples. "Avoiding LLMs would have been inefficient," he remarked. "I would have devoted enormous time and effort to one feature alone, while my true aim is to produce music using these impressive modifications."

Modded Cycles ranks among the most active projects. Five firmware updates appeared in its Discord announcements channel on a single day recently. 18nelli has indicated plans to pause new feature additions and focus on refining existing code while addressing bugs.

Fresh modifications and firmwares appear online daily. If a preferred piece of equipment lacks a desired function, it may soon feature on a GitHub repository. Even requests to run NES ROMs on a pocket synth could become feasible.

Some risks remain. These firmwares often receive less testing than official manufacturer versions. Company responses to the modding community differ, with many opting for silence. Elektron removed links to custom firmware from its forums. In an official statement, the company cautioned against modifications that might damage devices, noting that isolated changes can cause broader issues, especially after future official updates, and may create confusion about supported features.

Other firms, such as M-Vave, appear supportive. The company recently introduced FM1 Open, an open-source firmware with extra capabilities, along with a development kit and flashing tool for community use.

Reactions to AI and vibe coding in music gear remain varied. Products like the Polyend Endless have drawn criticism, and music forums contain complaints about AI-generated plugin content. Yet the community has shown greater acceptance toward vibe-coded firmware, partly because it extends the life of existing instruments and helps manage gear acquisition tendencies.
