This British luxury handset creator, famous for meticulously crafted devices frequently priced in the high thousands, emphasizes prestige over raw specifications. Its Alphafold foldable targets wealthy professionals such as top leaders by combining upscale components with an AI helper meant to streamline portions of a leader's daily operations.

I evaluated that concept directly. Rather than examining test metrics, lens performance, or entertainment playback - common elements in typical handset assessments - I dedicated several days to operating the foldable precisely as Vertu envisions for its clientele: handling paperwork, reviewing data tables and agreements, arranging corporate travel, streamlining repetitive duties, and depending on its AI helper as a virtual aide across business hours. The focus lay not on general smartphone quality but on suitability as an executive tool.

Central to the Alphafold stands Hermes Agent, a built-in AI helper developed atop the open-source Hermes initiative. The firm claims it examines documents, streamlines operations within applications, retains dialogue history, and transfers queries to a human support team if required. In contrast to standard phone AI tools that mainly reply to inputs, Hermes aims to handle complex sequences for users, positioning it as the core offering beyond the folding hardware.

In appearance, the Alphafold, beginning at $6,880, presents itself fully as a high-end product. Across multiple days I relied on the Alphafold as my main phone, shifting from basic queries to authentic executive routines. Instead of simple email drafting or fact checks, I directed Hermes to review data tables and agreements, arrange business journeys, oversee calendars, and trigger actions spanning several apps. Results were measured against Gemini on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Testing adapted over time. Initial software versions faced hurdles with file uploads, image review, and concierge connections. After notifying Vertu, server updates addressed these gaps and enabled completion of further evaluations.

Hermes favored independent execution while Gemini sought confirmation first. Hermes advanced more steps yet Gemini delivered higher precision overall.

Planning a business trip

A follow-up test involved an open task. I asked Hermes to arrange travel from Mumbai to Pune with a morning flight, lodging suggestion, and calendar addition. The agent noted no direct morning options and provided a Contact Butler option for concierge escalation. It also logged the wrong dates, setting the trip for 7 July instead of 18-19 July, leaving the process unfinished.

Gemini on the Samsung device continued by proposing alternate routes after identifying the lack of direct flights rather than deferring the task.

Working with business documents

Document handling showed mixed outcomes. Both agents received requests to examine a saved financial data table, outline quarterly outcomes, and check for third-quarter sales data.

In use the specialist agents serve best as initial references. They supply helpful overviews yet responses are AI-derived and warrant independent checks before legal, financial, or critical applications. Concierge escalation highlights current AI boundaries where human input remains essential.

Vertu presents the Alphafold as a business platform with an integrated ERP system for executive data access. Testing stayed within a demo setup limiting full assessment of real-world performance or enterprise integration.

The security aspect

Security holds equal weight to AI for the target users. Leaders may hesitate to share contracts or plans without clarity on data handling.

Vertu states Hermes conversations stay encrypted and avoid public model training. Users can select processing locations with enterprise setups allowing private infrastructure for sensitive needs.

These assurances include a dedicated A5 security chip for hardware protection of data, communications, and credentials. Verification was not possible in testing yet these elements form a key part of the executive appeal.

Living with the Alphafold

Outside AI functions the Alphafold operates like other flagship foldables. Battery endurance exceeded a full day in tests. Lack of wireless charging stands out as an unexpected gap at this cost given Samsung's Qi support alongside USB-C.
