The British administration has declared a prohibition on social media access for those under 16. The Prime Minister highlighted the move as a way to restore childhood experiences for young people. This follows actions in countries such as Australia that restricted platforms for minors. Initial statements also covered oversight for users below 18, and officials have now shared further plans including default nighttime limits for 16 and 17 year olds on social platforms.

In a recent statement released on Wednesday, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology outlined two fresh safeguards for those under 18. One measure introduces a default nighttime curfew for 16 and 17 year olds that runs from midnight until 6 am in the local area.

Additionally, the rules call for disabling functions that encourage extended use, such as automatic video playback and tailored content feeds aimed at older teens. These options will also activate as defaults on the apps.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall aims to collaborate with regulators on services providing risky or inaccurate mental health guidance, with a possible ban on certain chatbots that endanger children.
