Uber is strengthening its technology presence in India through fresh engineering campuses and a data center collaboration designed to fuel product development and infrastructure needs.

Uber outlined on Thursday its strategy to establish two new campuses capable of housing approximately 9,600 employees in Bengaluru and Hyderabad by late 2027. These facilities will enhance Uber's current activities in these prominent software and engineering centers.

Uber also revealed a partnership with Indian giant Adani Group to construct its initial data center in India, set to become operational in the fourth quarter of 2026. These updates came during Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi's recent trip to the country.

With about 3,500 employees already in India, Uber plans to expand its technical workforce as part of its global AI initiatives. Recruitment targets include positions in generative AI, machine learning, autonomous vehicle systems, and backend infrastructure.

India stands out as a key destination for engineering and product innovation among international tech firms, thanks to its vast pool of skilled software professionals. Uber's move aligns with its shift toward growth opportunities outside ride-hailing, including deeper commitments to AI, automation, and self-driving tech. This year, Uber allocated $330 million to its Indian operations to solidify its position.

That said, the ride-hailing sector in India presents hurdles like fierce pricing battles, driver supply issues, elevated incentive expenses, and evolving regulations that occasionally halt services in certain areas. Uber now contends with rising local challengers such as Rapido, which Khosrowshahi identified last year as its primary rival, surpassing Ola.

Despite these obstacles, Uber is positioning India as a major hub for its worldwide engineering and infrastructure efforts amid surging demand for AI expertise and computing power.
