Smart locks continue to evolve with cutting-edge features that deliver safer and simpler entry options. SwitchBot now joins the trend by releasing its Lock Vision model for $170 and the Lock Vision Pro for $230. Both devices rely on 3D structured-light facial recognition to let users open doors quickly and without effort.

The Vision Series locks project 20,000 infrared points to build detailed 3D maps of a face. SwitchBot states this approach reaches millimeter-level accuracy and completes an unlock in roughly one second. The system resists attempts to fool it with photos or videos and still functions when users wear glasses, hats, wigs, or makeup.

SwitchBot calls these the first smart locks to offer face recognition unlocking, although similar technology already appears on the Lockly Visage Zeno.

"Smart locks with face ID have become fairly common by now, actually," said Tyler Lacoma, CNET's home security and smart home editor, adding that the specific 3D structured-light method may still be novel.

A SwitchBot representative did not reply right away to a request for comment.

The Lock Vision Pro adds several other ways to unlock besides 3D face recognition. It includes palm vein scanning, which works without touching the device, plus semiconductor fingerprint unlocking. Users can also rely on app control, NFC, passwords, voice assistants, smartwatch commands, geofencing auto-unlock, and traditional keys.

Inside the lock sits a 10,000-mAh rechargeable battery rated for about 12 months of normal use. A CR123A backup cell supplies 500 emergency unlocks. When both batteries are empty, an external USB-C port can supply power just long enough to open the door. The unit carries an IP56 rating for water and dust protection and includes tamper alerts, forced-entry safeguards, automatic lockout after repeated failed attempts, and other safety measures.

All biometric information stays stored locally and is protected by AES-128 encryption. The locks also support Matter over Wi-Fi so they connect directly to major smart-home platforms without needing an extra hub.
