Students increasingly turn to AI tools for completing assignments, prompting concern among many parents about potential overdependence. Deloitte's 2026 Back-to-School Survey, involving 1,207 parents of K-12 children, indicated that 49 percent express worry their child leans on AI excessively.

These results highlight how quickly AI tools are entering classrooms compared to the slower rollout of supporting rules, leaving families uncertain about appropriate educational applications.

Key survey insights on student AI usage

The data reveals a notable disconnect between tool adoption and institutional oversight. Twenty-eight percent of students already incorporate generative AI into assignments, while only 33 percent of schools maintain any usage guidelines. Just 22 percent of schools supply or suggest approved generative AI resources for learners.

Even more revealing, 38 percent of parents remain unaware if their child's school maintains an AI policy, underscoring shortcomings in both communication and regulation. At the same time, 35 percent of parents worry that schools fall short in readying students for an AI-influenced world. The divide between actual student practices and formal school recognition continues to expand.

Parents stepping in to address shortcomings

As educational institutions delay action, families are addressing the issue independently. Thirteen percent report plans to fund external generative AI courses or tutoring, indicating growth in private AI learning options.

Interestingly, the survey also showed that parents employing generative AI along with search and social platforms for back-to-school purchases average 737 dollars per child, compared to 381 dollars spent by those avoiding digital aids entirely.

This pattern shows AI-related worries and usage rising together in households. Without quicker school responses on AI standards, parents will continue creating independent solutions, potentially widening differences in student preparedness.

As AI becomes a standard resource for many learners, the central issue remains whether schools can guide responsible application rather than allowing the technology to replace critical thinking.
