Suno, the platform enabling users to generate songs with artificial intelligence, announced fresh tools today for labeling tracks created on its service, restricting downloads, and revising community standards to curb imitation songs. The moves occur while Suno contends with several lawsuits from record labels and artist groups.

In a blog entry, co-founder and CEO Mikey Shulman outlined guiding principles and noted the platform aims to foster original works while expanding access to its AI music tools for more creators.

A central concern has involved users posting AI-made songs on other streaming sites and exploiting the system for revenue. Suno stated it will now apply audio watermarking and fingerprinting to block such misuse on external platforms. It is unclear if Suno will adopt an existing solution like Google's Synth ID or create a custom one, and the company offered no details when contacted about the approach.

The startup also formed a partnership with lyrics provider Musixmatch to integrate its Sentinel system for copyright detection, as noted in the blog post.

"These tools are built to be robust and resistant to tampering without harming audio quality. They are not meant to judge whether a song is good, meaningful, or sufficiently human," Shulman wrote in the blog. "We believe artists and platforms should ultimately decide what to disclose. Our focus is on providing tools that enable transparency and smoother industry collaboration."

The company said it will implement a new download policy to prevent mass distribution on streaming platforms, though it declined to share further specifics.

Suno has updated its community guidelines to ban "deceptive audio presented as real" and "using a real person's voice or likeness without permission" in order to stop copycat activity.

The firm, which secured $400 million in a Series D round in June, faces legal fights on multiple fronts. It is currently in litigation with Universal Music Group and Sony Music Group in a case led by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Late last month, a German court ruled in favor of government licensing agency GEMA and found Suno in violation of copyright rules.

Separately, reports indicated Suno suffered a data breach in November 2025 that showed the platform had scraped YouTube, Deezer, and Genius to train its models. Data breach service Have I Been Pwned later confirmed the incident affected 55 million users. The startup now faces a class action lawsuit in Massachusetts alleging it ignored security measures to prioritize profits.
