Remote work has become standard for many since the pandemic began, bringing added flexibility in how and where tasks are completed. Yet fresh findings indicate this change may be contributing to broader mental health difficulties.

Researchers publishing in the journal Science reviewed information from five major surveys involving more than 580,000 American workers from 2011 through 2024. The results point to remote arrangements driving greater social isolation and possibly accounting for roughly one third of the rise in mental distress seen after the pandemic.

The investigation centered on roles that can shift to remote settings, including software development and administrative positions, while contrasting them against positions that demand on-site presence.

Remote employees log more solitary hours

Those in remote-capable fields spent 58 percent more time working by themselves compared with workers in non-remote jobs. The chance of completing an entire day without any face-to-face contact rose by 72 percent.

Effects proved stronger for individuals living alone. These workers showed a markedly higher likelihood of passing a full day without personal interaction and reported a steeper climb in mental distress than colleagues sharing a home with family.

The data highlight how discussions of remote work often emphasize flexibility and output while underplaying what occurs when large numbers of people interact far less with others each day.

Overlooked costs of workplace flexibility

For many adults, the workplace serves as a primary venue for regular contact beyond household members. Brief chats, group sessions, and shared breaks may appear minor yet help sustain important social ties.

The authors stop short of calling for a full return to offices. Instead, the evidence suggests social connection may grow more difficult as remote and hybrid models expand.

With flexible policies gaining ground, the study prompts consideration of how employees can preserve meaningful relationships when the office is no longer a daily destination.
