Valve has introduced the Steam Machine, a SteamOS-driven hybrid blending PC and console features, across select regions after delays caused by shortages in memory and storage parts. Offered in 512GB and 2TB models, the device starts at $1,049 in the United States. Valve links the cost to prevailing manufacturing realities worldwide. The firm had targeted an early 2026 rollout at notably reduced prices.

Four configurations combine storage capacities with optional bundles. The 512GB Steam Machine without the controller sells for $1,049 or GBP 879. Adding the controller raises the total to $1,128 or GBP 938, while the controller alone lists at $99.

The 2TB Steam Machine without the controller is priced at $1,349 or GBP 1,149. Including the controller brings the cost to $1,428 or GBP 1,208. Both 2TB editions also include two extra faceplates in red fabric and solid walnut.

How to Reserve a Steam Machine

Valve opened a reservation system for buyers in the US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, and areas served by Komodo including Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Interested users can register on the official site until Thursday, June 25, at 10am PT. The product remains unavailable officially in India.

After registration closes, Valve will select participants through a random draw. On June 25, users learn whether they secured a reservation spot or joined the waitlist. Initial units ship to those in the reservation queue beginning Monday, June 29. Waitlisted customers receive updates once additional stock arrives.

The reservation approach aims to limit bots and scalpers while ensuring equitable access.

Steam Machine Price Reflects Component Costs

In a company blog post, Valve attributed the elevated pricing to rising component expenses, noting that earlier pricing targets had become unworkable.

Steam Machine, like other Valve hardware, relies on parts sourced globally. Selling prices directly track those component costs. When sourcing began in 2023, forecasts assumed typical declines in PC hardware prices over time. Recent shifts, especially in RAM and storage, have altered that pattern due to multiple market factors affecting hardware production everywhere. Current prices therefore mirror secured component rates from the past six months.

Market conditions and shortages have also limited launch quantities.

The device runs SteamOS 3 on a custom AMD Zen 4 CPU paired with AMD RDNA3 graphics. It includes 16GB DDR5 system memory, 8GB GDDR6 graphics memory, and up to 2TB NVMe SSD storage expandable through microSD. Connectivity covers WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and a built-in 2.4 GHz wireless adapter for the Steam controller. Ports comprise DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0, two front USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, two rear USB-A 2.0 ports, one rear USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, and a Gigabit Ethernet connection. Dimensions measure 152 x 162.4 x 156mm with a weight of 2.6kg.
