A sluggish song can easily throw off your running rhythm. Spotify addresses this issue with a fresh personalized feature designed to align your music with every phase of the workout, from the opening stride through the final recovery period.

The streaming service now offers Running Mode, a Premium option that generates a tailored session and playlist matched to your stride. It factors in your music preferences and ideal tempo to support your fitness goals. Users start with 25 preset running options that can be adjusted for session type, length, genre, and beats per minute.

Current session styles cover steady runs, interval training, and pyramid workouts. Runners may also turn on English audio cues that provide timely tips and encouragement while keeping interruptions to the music minimal.

Workout plan pairs with custom playlist

Running Mode applies Spotify's personalization tools to your exercise structure. Instead of selecting a generic running playlist, you specify the planned duration and session style. You can also set the desired music and tempo to enhance the run. The resulting playlists draw from each user's listening history, so two people selecting the same preset will receive different tracks.

The tool extends Spotify's Prompted Playlist system, which combines listening data with user instructions to create targeted mixes. Fitness-related prompts have grown popular, with examples such as a 30-minute 5K playlist that holds a consistent pace before shifting to relaxed cooldown tracks.

Spotify has explored running features before

Over ten years ago the company released an earlier running tool that used phone sensors to track movement and pick matching tracks. That version ended in 2018. The new Running Mode refines the concept by letting users set the workout and target tempo in advance rather than relying on ongoing pace detection.

Note that this remains a music feature rather than a full fitness tracker, with no GPS, distance, or health metrics included. It is available now in the Fitness hub for Premium users on iOS in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden. No Android release or wider rollout has been confirmed yet.
