Over the past year Spotify has quietly deleted tens of thousands of fabricated podcasts that were reportedly deployed to advertise illegal online pharmacies and fraudulent sites. A fresh congressional report now probes why such a scheme could expand on one of the globe's biggest audio services.

Per coverage in Wired, perpetrators generated thousands of sham podcasts never meant for genuine audiences. Their purpose was instead to distort Spotify search results and elevate sites hawking prescription medications without oversight, such as opioids, stimulants, and benzodiazepines.

Spotify removed more than 57,000 podcast episodes along with over 3,000 shows and restricted roughly 3,500 linked accounts. The action followed ongoing pressure from legislators and press reports that exposed the operation's reach.

Senator Maggie Hassan led the inquiry and faulted Spotify for delayed action plus its failure to alert law enforcement despite ties to sites engaged in unlawful drug distribution.

The podcasts were never really podcasts

One striking revelation is that most material was never produced for listening.

Spotify informed investigators that many sham podcasts operated chiefly as search spam. Operators packed titles, descriptions, and artwork with links to pharmacy sites and scams, aiming to leverage Spotify's search-engine influence to lift external rankings.

Spotify noted that 94 percent of removed episodes logged zero plays while 99 percent drew under 10 streams. A small number nonetheless reached listeners and carried guidance on buying substances such as modafinil via cryptocurrency.

The inquiry also uncovered matching material on additional podcast services, underscoring how readily low-grade content can spread across platforms simultaneously.

AI is making the spam problem even bigger

Researchers and officials contend that artificial intelligence is easing the execution of such schemes.

The report highlights AI-generated podcasts that use synthetic voices and automated scripts to imitate authentic programs. Spotify stated it maintains AI tools against music spam yet lacks a specific ban on AI-created podcasts and concedes limited capability to spot such material.

Spotify relies on automated detectors, human moderators, and third-party services to flag violations. The congressional review maintains that the volume of fake podcasts exposes notable weaknesses in these safeguards.

The episode illustrates a mounting issue for online platforms. With AI lowering barriers to mass content production, spam efforts no longer rely solely on websites. They now leverage trusted services, algorithms, and recommendations to reach audiences in harder-to-detect ways.

For Spotify the episode underscores that moderation demands extend beyond social media. Podcast platforms too face sophisticated campaigns that exploit search systems to direct users toward illegal or hazardous offerings.
