Snapchat has rolled out a tool for users to broadcast the tracks they are hearing live through an update in Snap Map, according to exclusive reporting by TechCrunch.

Named Now Playing, the option allows connection to a music streaming account starting with Spotify so people can display their active song on the map and check what tracks their contacts are enjoying at the moment.

The tool also ties into Spotlight clips, Snapchat short videos similar to TikTok, letting viewers save discovered songs straight to Spotify or open the track page on that service.

People set their own audience for listening updates, and the system skips any display of prior tracks or full history, though sharing stays on if the app was opened in the last day. After 24 hours of inactivity sharing stops on its own and restarts only after the next launch. Options exist to halt sharing for three hours, a full day, or until manually turned back on.

This launch arrives amid broader moves by social platforms to support music discovery and exchange. TikTok enables song sharing from streaming services and saving of new finds, while Instagram supports track sharing via its short Notes updates in direct message inboxes.

Spotify has also added its own social sharing tools that let users broadcast current listening sessions to contacts in real time.

Music offers one of the most personal forms of self-expression and gains extra value when it connects friends, Manny Adler, Snapchat head of music, noted in a prepared statement. Now Playing brings fresh expression and discovery to Snap Map by letting users share their daily soundtrack and uncover new songs through known contacts.

The addition expands Snap Map, which reaches more than 450 million monthly users. First introduced in 2017 to show friend locations and public Snaps worldwide, the map has grown to include local spots, events, and now music finds.

Snapchat states the feature is launching in markets where both Spotify and the app operate, with Canada arriving shortly.
