The coincidence has puzzled observers for years. Fertility rates across the US and many other nations started to decline in 2007, exactly when Apple introduced the first iPhone. Two recent academic papers, noted by major outlets, now suggest this timing reflects more than chance.

Key findings from the studies

Economist Caitlin Myers along with student Ezekiel Hooper at Middlebury College focused on a key detail from the early iPhone era: the device was exclusive to the AT&T network at launch. This created a natural test case. Areas with solid AT&T service gained quick smartphone access, whereas other regions lagged behind.

By examining fertility records from these differing areas, the team estimated that early iPhone availability accounted for up to half of the US fertility drop from 2007 through 2011. Effects appeared strongest among those aged 15 to 24. Possible drivers include reduced face-to-face social time, easier access to online adult content, and improved information on birth control and related choices.

A broader analysis came from Hernan Moscoso Boedo at the University of Cincinnati and PhD student Nathan Hudson. They reviewed World Bank figures from 128 nations and observed sharp drops in teenage birth rates as smartphones spread widely, even after accounting for variations in health care, culture, and economies. Within the US, regions with quicker rollout of high-speed internet and 4G networks experienced faster reductions in teen fertility.

Debate over the claims

Economist Theodore Joyce from Baruch College notes that teen birth rates had already been trending downward before 2007. He views the smartphone connection as interesting yet still unconfirmed by conclusive proof.

These papers emerge amid growing concerns from officials in the US, Europe, and East Asia over the economic effects of smaller future populations. Should smartphones prove a significant factor, solutions become harder to design, since time spent on screens resists simple policy fixes unlike economic downturns or housing expenses.
