Sharp enters the wearables space with its first device, the Karada Mate Watch, which features a capability absent from most competing products. It leverages a bioelectrical impedance sensor to track shifts in body water and sugar levels, allowing real-time estimates of calories consumed from food and beverages.

How the calorie tracking works

Sharp created this function together with HEALBE Corporation using its FLOW Technology. The system monitors fluid movements and sugar variations to approximate calorie consumption and compares it with calories burned for an ongoing balance readout. Hydration is also tracked, triggering audio and vibration warnings if water levels drop too low.

The screen changes based on time of day via Circuit View. Mornings display sleep data, weather, and the daily agenda. Daytime views highlight steps, heart rate, and calories used. Evening mode previews the next day’s outlook and schedule.

Additional specifications include a 1.32-inch OLED display at 466 by 466 resolution with always-on capability, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, skin temperature sensing, SpO2 readings, and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity. It offers 5 ATM water resistance plus IP6X dust protection and works with Android 14 or newer alongside iOS 17 or later.

Pricing and availability

Release begins in Japan on July 9 at 59,400 yen, roughly 370 dollars, in gold and silver finishes. Global rollout details remain pending. A companion Karada Mate app subscription costs 600 yen monthly and supplies expert dietitian advice on nutrition, rest, activity, and general wellness.

Automatic calorie intake monitoring has long been missing from wearables. Sharp’s method provides the Karada Mate Watch with a strong starting point, although actual performance accuracy will ultimately influence buyer decisions.
