Santa Monica Studio has verified that the next God of War game, titled God of War Laufey, will ship in physical disc format even though Sony plans to halt disc manufacturing for new PlayStation releases. The platform holder revealed this month that it will cease producing discs for upcoming titles beginning January 2028.

On Saturday the developer stated that God of War Laufey, first shown during Sony's State of Play event in June, will receive a retail disc version. Given Sony's announced deadline, the title must arrive before January 2028.

This timeline suggests the sequel will likely debut on PS5 sometime next year.

God of War Laufey Could Launch in 2027

The game was unveiled with an extended gameplay segment at last June's State of Play. The footage introduced the new lead character Laufey, Kratos' spouse from the Norse era, and depicted her adventures in Everywhen, the divine afterlife.

Neither Santa Monica nor Sony provided an exact release window, yet the studio indicated the project would reach PS5 players soon. Industry reporter Jason Schreier also noted after the reveal that the game is not "years away."
