Samsung is set to host its Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22. In this semi-annual hardware presentation, the South Korean electronics leader is likely to introduce its upcoming foldable lineup, possibly featuring the long-awaited wide-fold variant. At the same time, the company persists in experimenting with alternative creative foldable smartphone ideas. A recent report indicates that a fresh patent has surfaced for a device similar to the Galaxy Z Flip, equipped with a screen capable of folding both ways thanks to a hinge that supports 360-degree movement.

Samsung Patent for a New Foldable Galaxy Phone

The patent, revealed by Fixyflow along with information from tipster @xleaks7, shows a clamshell foldable phone akin to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. The design is said to incorporate a hinge permitting the screen to fold across a complete 360-degree spectrum. This feature is intended to support folding in both directions.

Per the application, the gadget might feature a central flexible display bordered by curved screen areas on the top section of its outer surface. The main display is expected to stay safeguarded within the body when folded inward, leaving the curved external screen exposed. Theoretically, this outer display might show alerts, calls, audio controls, timers, widgets, and camera views without the need to open the device.

The report notes that a primary technical issue tackled in the patent involves combining curved display parts with a folding hinge. The patent apparently recommends small spaces near the hinge to prevent the curved areas from interfering during folding. Yet this might lead to problems as the spaces could disrupt the display connections carrying image signals.

To overcome this, the patent recommends redirecting the display connections around the spaces via several internal layers. This approach would theoretically permit the electrical routes to pass without contact. The folding area is also said to be isolated from the curved edge displays.
