Apple's first foldable iPhone is moving steadily toward launch. Widely expected to arrive as the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra, the device is slated for a September debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models. Fresh reports indicate that manufacturing remains on schedule, with Samsung Display receiving clearance to start making OLED display modules for the handset. Production of certain parts, including the 3D-printed hinge, may still influence the final release timing.

Samsung Increases Output of Foldable OLED Panels

Industry sources cited by The Elec report that Apple has approved Samsung Display to produce foldable OLED modules for the iPhone Ultra. The company has begun running select back-end lines in Vietnam to meet an early order of roughly three million panels due for delivery this year.

Apple requires a minimum yield rate of 70 percent before green-lighting full-scale production. Samsung Display has reportedly surpassed this threshold, reaching final yields above 80 percent and earning official approval. The firm is positioned as the sole supplier of foldable OLED panels under a three-year agreement that gives Apple exclusive sourcing from Samsung. Initial shipments this year are projected at around three million units.

Analysts and leaks continue to point to a September launch window alongside the iPhone 18 series. However, the report notes that the schedule hinges on the supply of critical components such as the hinge, which directly affects folding performance, crease visibility, and overall durability.

The hinge mechanism remains one of the toughest production hurdles. The phone's 3D-printed hinge module is currently dealing with unwanted noise after assembly. An industry source stated that Apple is working to stabilize hinge module output for its first foldable smartphone, while Samsung Display faces no issues on its end. The launch date will depend on Apple's progress with device components, especially the hinge.

Apple's foldable OLED modules are being made at Samsung Display facilities in Vietnam, with OLED back-end processes taking place in China. The display is expected to incorporate Colour Filter on Encapsulation technology, and Samsung is using M16 organic material for the panels.
