A few days back, my esthetician applied hot wax to my face. The bushy caterpillars I call eyebrows needed shaping - as did my upper lip fuzz. I dread this monthly ordeal, but excess facial hair remains a persistent issue. Hirsutism serves as one of the visible signs of a disorder that has affected me for over ten years. Until recently, I knew it as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Typically, waxing sessions involve small talk about the weather (deep discussions are tough with hair being yanked from your skin). But that visit, we discussed how the international medical community this week renamed PCOS to polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, or PMOS.

Several factors drove this change. Contrary to its original label, PMOS - impacting about 170 million women globally, or one in eight - frequently lacks ovarian cysts. The new term better captures its nature as a hormonal and metabolic disorder, extending beyond reproduction. In truth, it affects various organs and links to issues like insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and sleep apnea. As reported by The New York Times, emphasizing a single trait - ovarian cysts - has caused insufficient doctor training, limited research funds, late diagnoses, and disjointed care for those with PMOS. From my perspective, physicians have dismissed it as harmless, refusing interventions unless pregnancy is the goal.

Coincidentally, my esthetician lives with PMOS too. She experiences ovarian cysts; I do not. I deal with insulin resistance; she does not. My hirsutism bothers me, while she battles cystic acne. We each gained around 60 pounds unexpectedly, but she managed hers via intermittent fasting, a tailored diet, and supplements like milk thistle and myo-inositol, which boosts insulin sensitivity. Metformin - a diabetes medication used off-label for PMOS - failed her completely, yet it works well for me alongside a GLP-1 drug.

I have shared similar stories with countless others facing PMOS. We are struck by how one diagnosis produces such varied symptoms. We exchange advice, but no remedy proves universal among those I know. For me, controlling it has taken about 12 years of effort. This struggle drew me to wearables and health technology initially.

It is the first thought that crosses my mind when health tech firms or influencers promote personalized health solutions.

May brings a surge of meetings with companies in my coverage area. These talks cover upcoming products, category directions, and wellness trends. Among the six I have held this year, one theme dominates: personalized health.

Executives acknowledge sifting valuable insights from vast health data is challenging. Yet they stress that intelligent data use unlocks personalized health - tailored advice from your unique metrics, not generic tips. For instance, if heart rate variability indicates recovery but sleep was poor, a device might suggest 20 minutes of gentle vinyasa yoga over intense HIIT. Logging meals could reveal roasted broccoli clashing with a medication, causing sulfur burps. Based on CGM and blood data, trackers might recommend supplements. This, they say, empowers greater health control.

The idea captivates. Health varies greatly by individual. Genetics influence drug responses, disease risks, and ideal activities. No wonder tech companies embrace it. Still, my PMOS experience tempers enthusiasm.

Most doctors advise PMOS patients to lose weight, as it often eases or reverses symptoms. The catch: insulin resistance drives weight gain, complicating basic calorie math in a feedback loop. Elevated insulin spurs androgen excess, promoting belly fat storage. Research indicates PMOS lowers basal metabolic rates, so daily calorie burn lags behind others. It may also hinder muscle gains.

No fitness or nutrition tool I have seen factors this in. There is no toggle for adjusted recommendations or calorie estimates. (This explains my caution on tracker calorie counts.) Reproductive features often falter too. Fertile window predictions rarely work for me, as algorithms ignore hormonal birth control - common for PMOS and beyond. Do they adjust for contraceptive effects on temperature? Each company uses secret algorithms, so inquire directly.

Future advancements may change this. Wearables aid research into biometric links, especially in reproductive health. Currently, though, personalized options for non-standard cases are scarce. Algorithms target the average, leaving outliers to improvise solutions.

Part of this stems from timing. Generative AI is nascent; firms learn limits on the fly. The body holds many secrets, perplexing even experts. Solid science demands time, but tech races ahead. PMOS dates to 1935; its name update arrives in 2026 after 14 years and 50+ medical groups. Personalized features launch now. For simple health profiles, it works smoothly. For complex ones, foundations shift unpredictably.

For me, it requires heavy lifting. I must guide AI coaches, weigh PMOS and fatty liver disease parameters, select key metrics from years of data, research independently, seek multiple doctors, test treatments, grill experts, and verify facts.

I am not dismissing personalized medicine. Previews of features spark optimism. Over 12 years, such tools would have helped - perhaps avoiding a quack prescribing pig thyroid for a wrong hypothyroidism call. I hope firms add modes for diagnoses, meds, and quirks.

Companies will market it as ready now - just wear and ask AI. Reality differs. It is not effortless background magic.
