On Tuesday, AI infrastructure firm Runware introduced its modular data center known as the Sonic Inference Pod. Built as one movable unit, the Pod offers a flexible form of compute that can complement the large-scale projects from major hyperscalers.

Runware claims the Pod delivers inference at improved quality yet reduced expense compared to other serverless platforms and GPU clouds. Its modular setup allows quick capacity growth through additional pods instead of enlarging a permanent facility. This approach points toward the future, according to Flaviu Radulescu, co-founder and CEO of Runware.

"We see distributed compute placed nearer to users for quicker inference as the long-term winner," he noted, highlighting his company. Beyond lower costs, Radulescu pointed out that the system scales rapidly, installs wherever power exists, and adjusts to fresh hardware launches. The pods rely on a closed-loop cooling method without water and can be assembled in days rather than the extended timelines for conventional centers.

"Inference demand rises quicker than new facilities can appear," Radulescu stated. "Our goal is to support global intelligence as the foundation for every AI model with capacity that matches demand rather than limiting it."

Runware operates 10 pods across the U.S., Europe, and Asia-Pacific, Radulescu added. The company already serves clients such as Higgsfield AI and Wix while holding 160 sites ready for pods. A $50 million Series A round closed in December to support image generation infrastructure, with pods viewed as central to the mission of delivering inference broadly.

Labs including OpenAI and SpaceX continue pursuing large data centers in the U.S., with OpenAI nearing a reported $500 billion Ohio project. Radulescu views the pods as distinct due to their adaptability rather than competition.

"Each pod operates within one network so requests route to available capacity near users, and traffic shifts if a pod fails," he explained, noting that issues affect single units instead of entire sites. "Clients seeking dedicated hardware receive full pods."

He expressed little concern over others replicating the model, citing slow hardware cycles and limited expert talent for construction and maintenance.

"An error in circuit board design delays progress by months across redesign, simulation, fabrication, testing and delivery," he said. "Each decision requires deep knowledge of component roles and failure impacts."

AI data center construction raises debate over resource demands. Areas hosting centers have noted higher utility expenses. Runware envisions future renewable operation without straining local supplies, though that remains ahead.

Radulescu observed that AI power consumption will grow anyway due to inference needs regardless of provider. The focus stays on meeting that demand through efficient means. "This method avoids transmission losses and water cooling while using existing power without new grid builds. Scaling inference this way reduces needs for additional grid and water resources at the same compute level."
