Jacob Crowe covered 26 miles through Chicago over three days amid heavy humidity and morning showers while taking part in numerous digital fights. He joined many other enthusiasts hunting for uncommon creatures, especially the Shiny forms.

"Gathering as one group improves the whole experience," Crowe noted about the players who assembled for Pokemon Go Fest.

I joined the throngs as well, watching my device lose power under the sun while securing many digital beings across Grant Park and surrounding zones.

That huge assembly in early June transformed the title I had enjoyed solo for twelve months into something resembling a huge concert filled with equally passionate supporters, perhaps even more devoted than myself.

Such intensity came as a surprise. Although the title exploded in popularity upon release in 2016 with participants flooding public areas to collect creatures via augmented reality, the initial wave eventually faded and I too stepped away after a short time.

Yet the underlying passion never vanished, and occasions like Go Fest simply reignite it fully.

Organizers anticipated 40,000 daily attendees, yet reports from GoNintendo indicated over 90,000 tickets sold for the staggered Grant Park access, with 717,000 total participants across Chicago capturing close to 62 million creatures. Six proposals occurred during the festivities, underscoring the title's unexpected social role.

This edition stood out as it celebrated the game's tenth year and the ninth Go Fest, returning to Chicago, while aligning with a Pokemon Fossil Museum display at the Field Museum that offered rich details on creature development through large skeletal displays, preserved specimens, and an extensive store.

The weekend overlapped with a national soccer match and a half-marathon, drawing such numbers that play paused temporarily in select spots including the museum.

Returning to Regular Play

I resumed last year alongside relatives who shared my renewed commitment after earlier breaks.

Numerous features had appeared since my departure, including remote trades, community routes, and massive raids needing many participants at once.

The additions felt daunting initially, yet guidance from seasoned players helped, supplemented by online resources and searches for solutions.

Daily play became routine as we sent gifts, exchanged favored creatures, and logged extensive steps. Go Fest supplied the perfect occasion to convene, sample city cuisine, and enjoy the title collectively after separate sessions.

Single-day Grant Park tickets were purchased along with museum access. Fans appeared throughout the city wearing themed apparel or full costumes upon our arrival.

Generations mixed freely as players of all ages used devices to activate stops and pursue rare powerful forms.

Connecting Through Shared Gameplay

Creator Niantic designed the experience around real-world exploration, a point founder John Hanke emphasized in prior discussions about the studio's shift in ownership.

Even outdoors the activity can feel solitary due to focus on the screen and distant interactions.

Go Fest changed that dynamic entirely.

Surrounded by thousands of visitors and residents, we entered a vast shared space where strangers inquired about recent catches at local spots, complimented cosplay efforts, and noticed our museum souvenirs. Within our circle we exchanged creatures, restocked items, planned strategies, and followed updates while I spent around 30 dollars on extras and others invested more.

Chasing Powerful Variants

Linh tracked online buzz while Jacob, who logged those 26 miles and is also family, led raid efforts including 225 attempts for Mewtwo. The aim extended beyond basic captures to perfect or Shiny versions known as Hundo or Shundo, plus location-specific editions.

He and his wife arrived from Indianapolis after smaller local events and found the scale surprising yet enjoyable, committing long daily hours and hoping to repeat it.

Jacob guided us to an early Lincoln Park raid gathering before the main Grant Park activities, where light rain fell as we collected creatures and observed trades amid a preview crowd.

Excitement Over Rare Finds

A large inflatable Jigglypuff near the fountain created an immediate sense of scale shift since the in-game version appears much smaller. Oversized banners and stops marked the grounds as we prepared supplies under clearing skies that turned hot, with some using phone shades against glare and heat.

Tasks involved zone travel and specific catches or raids, accompanied by theme music as participants moved and tossed balls. Nearby celebrations erupted over strong finds, and the finale united hundreds in a coordinated Mega Mewtwo effort requiring phone gestures, ending in collective cheers and successful captures for our group.

Exploring the Exhibit

Further raids and trades followed before our museum visit, where detailed fossil-style displays of creatures included skeletons, descriptions, and novelty items like preserved specimens. The thoughtful setup prompted careful explanations for young visitors while the attached store limited purchases of popular plush items.

The display continues through April 2027.

Community Spirit at the Event

Exhaustion set in by Sunday from constant screen time and tracking acquisitions, though we remained relative newcomers compared to veterans like David Barnwell who attends multiple cities yearly and values the diverse friendly crowds.

He noted shifts after recent ownership changes, including fewer exclusive releases and more dispersed challenges, preferring concentrated foot-access formats, with future plans hinging on appealing destinations like Tokyo or scenic sites.
