Plex is expanding its platform with new social capabilities intended to compete against networks like Reddit and Letterboxd. The company revealed these additions on Wednesday, with the goal of reshaping how users engage with its service.

A standout update is Discussions, an online forum that lets people post comments and exchange thoughts on movies or TV programs. Plex hopes the space will draw dedicated conversations away from other community sites focused on entertainment.

The firm developed a moderation process blending AI tools with human review to oversee both images and written posts.

Lists form another feature, giving users the ability to build, organize and distribute collections of favored titles while using emoji reactions rather than basic ratings and uploading images. Import support from outside platforms plus options to react or comment on friends lists will arrive later this year.

Plex is also introducing a Match Score that forecasts enjoyment of a given title by analyzing personal viewing patterns and tastes.

The tool examines watched content and ratings to generate a percentage showing alignment with individual preferences, reducing the effort needed to find suitable material, according to co-founder and chief product officer Scott Olechowski.

Alerts will notify users of fresh activity tied to lists, titles and professionals they follow.

Lists are open to every Plex user now, while Discussions launches this month and remaining tools roll out over the coming months.

These additions seek to foster community-based discovery so viewers can exchange suggestions, compare views and connect around shared interests.

Viewers spend increasing time deciding what to watch and often rely on trusted friends or groups for guidance, Olechowski noted, adding that discovery now functions as a collective activity best supported by the apps people use.

The updates arrive amid growing competition in entertainment, where streaming services and social platforms both seek user attention, with some services even adding short video clips inside their apps.

This marks Plex second effort at social features after launching Discover Together in 2023 for profiles and friend activity tracking, followed by public profiles and reviews last year.

The changes coincide with a sharp rise in the Lifetime Plex Pass price to 749.99 dollars starting July 1, following a previous jump from 119.99 dollars to 249.99 dollars last year.

Plex currently reports more than 42 million monthly active users spread across 180 countries and territories.
