Google looks set to unveil its own tracking device to challenge the AirTag, yet the strategy does not appear to hinge on offering a bargain price to draw in Android fans.

The Pixel Tag is projected to sell for €34.90 across Europe based on reports from Dealabs. Apple lists the AirTag at €35 in France, giving Google only a tiny 10-cent edge. An announcement is anticipated at the company's hardware showcase on August 12.

With pricing this close, attention turns to the device features themselves. Shoppers are unlikely to select one tracking system over another merely to save pocket change.

Pixel Tag Avoids Undercutting on Cost

The reported figure frames the Pixel Tag as a straightforward Android match for the AirTag instead of a budget option. Google seems to count on seamless ties to Android and the Find Hub service to draw interest.

Pixel device owners may find the first-party option appealing. Still, the slim margin leaves little tolerance if the hardware does not deliver performance on par with Apple's offering at virtually the same cost.

Core Capabilities Remain Unclear

The Pixel Tag is expected to connect through Google's Find Hub network and feature an onboard speaker for nearby searches. These elements address basic needs, yet they leave open whether Google can equal the AirTag in critical areas.

Ultra-Wideband technology has not been verified. Lacking it, the device might miss precise directional cues when items are nearby. Google has also not clarified if the power source will be user-replaceable or built-in rechargeable.

Such specifications will determine if users receive tracking performance comparable to the AirTag or simply the ease of a Google-labeled add-on.
