Costs keep rising in small increments, and the trend extends beyond fuel or food prices. T-Mobile has lifted the rates on two mandatory fees added to mobile plans, though it is far from alone among carriers in this approach.

Over the past eighteen months the three largest US wireless companies have adjusted prices in modest steps that may go unnoticed each month yet accumulate across the year.

Fees, taxes and plan adjustments

Many carriers once included taxes and fees within their advertised rates to simplify budgeting. That practice has largely ended among the leading providers: AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

The latest fee changes remain small enough to escape notice on most statements. Starting October 12, T-Mobile raised its Regulatory Programs and Telco Recovery fees on every line. Voice lines now pay an extra dollar, moving the combined total from 4.49 dollars to 5.49 dollars monthly. Lines used for tablets or watches increased by fifty cents, from 2.10 dollars to 2.60 dollars.

T-Mobile had already raised these same fees in April 2025. Over roughly a year and a half the combined increase reaches two dollars per voice line and one dollar per connected-device line each month.

Multi-year price locks on the core plan do not cover these added charges. Carriers continue to adjust the separate fees on a regular basis.

Analyst Roger Entner of Recon Analytics notes that the frequency of the adjustments creates more frustration than a single annual change would. He questions why companies choose to apply several small increases rather than one larger adjustment.

T-Mobile is not the only carrier making such moves. AT&T lifted its Administrative and Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee from 3.99 dollars to 4.99 dollars per line in August after an earlier rise in December 2025. Verizon increased its fees in August 2025, moving voice lines from 3.50 dollars to 3.78 dollars and data-only lines from 1.60 dollars to 3.97 dollars.

Base plan prices have stayed mostly steady, with Verizon as the main exception. After holiday promotions ended, the company raised its myPlan options by ten dollars per line for new customers compared with early 2026 rates.

Entner observes that increases below five dollars rarely prompt customers to switch. Larger jumps of fifteen or twenty dollars would draw stronger reactions, yet none of the carriers have taken that step.

Shifting legacy plans

AT&T updated its unlimited lineup in March and raised rates on many older plans by as much as twenty dollars per account. Additional legacy plans saw similar increases in August. The company described the changes as reflecting ongoing costs for speed and reliability while also encouraging moves to current offerings.

In June, T-Mobile began moving selected customers to newer plans. Although most transfers kept costs similar, some lines faced increases of up to six dollars monthly. The change was not optional, and at least one customer submitted an informal complaint to the FCC.

Price guarantees fade

Verizon promoted a three-year price lock in April of last year, yet the guarantee ended when the Simplicity plan launched in August. T-Mobile had offered a five-year lock, now limited to two specific plans. Existing customers retain their protections, but new sign-ups face fewer options.

Price guarantees can also limit flexibility. Customers who want to change plans within the same carrier often lose the lock.

Long-term view shows lower real costs

Industry data indicate that wireless service has become less expensive in real terms since 2007. While nominal dollars spent have risen, the share of disposable income devoted to wireless has declined.

Options to reduce monthly expenses

Even modest fee increases add up across multiple lines. Prepaid services such as Cricket, Mint Mobile and Visible operate on the major networks and often cost less when unused features are removed. US Mobile allows selection of the strongest network in a given area.

Single-line plans illustrate the difference. T-Mobile Essential Saver 2.0 costs fifty dollars with fifty gigabytes of high-speed data. Mint Mobile twelve-month unlimited service averages thirty dollars monthly when paid in advance and includes up to twenty gigabytes of hotspot use.

Verizon Simplicity at forty-five dollars per line provides access to faster 5G speeds yet requires all lines on an account to switch together. AT&T Build-A-Plan starts at fifteen dollars for one gigabyte when bringing an unlocked device, with add-ons available for extra data.

Free alternatives exist as well. TextNow supplies calling, texting and limited data supported by ads, with paid upgrades for heavier use.

Each major carrier offers short-term trials to test coverage before committing. These steps can help offset rising costs when budget constraints matter most.
