Five years have passed since the last appearance. Much has transformed.

Indeed, the landscape evolved considerably.

The creator space shifted with short-form clips dominating culture. Patreon adapted too. How has your vision for the company developed? How do you characterize it in 2026?

Interestingly, my response aligns with observations on the media sector. Patreon functions as an index of small business media companies. We support their growth, compensation, and fan engagement. Their challenges affect us directly as a business and through our customer relationships.

The primary change stems from upstream developments at TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. The key transition moved from follower models and genuine subscriptions toward interest-based distribution.

Numerous issues arise from this, spanning societal concerns like polarization, dependency, and isolation, alongside creator difficulties where deterministic fan reach diminishes.

Without reliable fan access, community and business building suffer. This platform pivot away from followers toward interests represents the most significant creator economy impact.

It parallels Google Zero, where platforms cease routing traffic to long-term community builders who used them for initial exposure.

Recognition grows that these individuals served platform users rather than building independent followings. This clarity prompted key product decisions at Patreon centered on strategy.

The media sector faces similar blunt signals from platforms asserting control over audiences and attention flows. Marketers receive comparable messages, with visions of AI handling middle layers. Little coordinated response appears in publishing, yet creator spaces show Patreon addressing the follower-to-interest transition. Does broader organized action exist among smaller creators?

Systemic coordination remains limited due to network effects. Creators continue on these platforms primarily for audience growth despite software merits. Traffic consolidation poses a core challenge.

This prompted interest in adding Mike McCue to the board and his Surf work. True resolution requires people owning network effects rather than platforms. Similar promise appears in Bluesky and open social web efforts.

Early ecosystem building around open networks merits attention, though not currently on our roadmap. Such changes could prevent recurrence of past issues.

Reviewing two decades, social media emerges as a flawed experiment with harmful human impacts despite connectivity gains. Positive aspects trace more to internet fundamentals than layered platforms.

The internet enables valuable connections and media distribution. Yet overlying systems produced unintended large-scale damage. Future architectural choices must avoid repeating these patterns.

Ideas around federation and open networks warrant further exploration. Hank Green recently described this as the close of one internet era and start of another. Patreon must navigate current conditions while eyeing transitions. How is the company structured now?

This merits detailed attention. Ironically, countering these dynamics required Patreon to incorporate discovery systems for creator growth and reach. Reliance on external platforms for top-of-funnel traffic proved unsustainable.

Recent years focused on developing media, distribution, and hosting capabilities including native video, chat, discovery features, short-post tools, and feeds. These enable creators to generate their own growth and provide Patreon an internal audience channel. The approach arose from necessity over the past four to five years rather than earlier plans.
