Ninja Theory, creators of the Hellblade franchise, introduced the next chapter during the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday. Titled Senua, this action-adventure responds directly to feedback that Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and its 2024 follow-up Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II emphasized visuals at the expense of interactive depth. Studio lead Dom Matthews stated the project launches in 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 5, and Game Pass.

A fresh approach to the Hellblade formula

Senua abandons the strict linear path of earlier entries for a wider action-adventure design. Matthews notes the experience divides evenly across combat, exploration, and puzzle elements. The setting expands to roughly double the scale of Hellblade II through connected zones, yet remains distinct from full open-world territory.

Combat receives the largest update, allowing Senua to face groups of foes simultaneously while wielding paired weapons such as axes and torches alongside new Focus powers. One ability fractures the environment for both movement and battle control. The series also introduces boss fights for the first time.

The narrative continues after Hellblade II, situating Senua in a purgatory modeled on her early home. Her goal is to reach the afterlife and reconnect with lost companions. Matthews emphasizes the title suits both series veterans and first-time players.

Ninja Theory drops Project: Mara to concentrate on Senua

Senua represents the first occasion Ninja Theory has assigned its complete staff to one effort since DmC: Devil May Cry over a decade ago. The team numbers 85 members. Matthews also verified that the announced horror title Project: Mara has been discontinued to support full focus on Senua.
