Continuing my evaluation of current antivirus programs, I spent the past six weeks running Norton Antivirus as my main security solution to determine if this established name still delivers top performance. The results came back as a qualified yes.

As a malware defense tool, Norton excels. It stands among the leaders in threat detection and includes numerous advanced security options. Yet the experience suffered from repeated promotional interruptions that affected my overall impression. The issues did not prompt removal of the software, which remains highly effective, but they did reduce satisfaction with an otherwise solid product.

Layout

Norton Antivirus uses a layout similar to other modern suites, with a Home tab that provides a central overview of system status. Other sections appear along the left side in a clear and simple navigation structure.

The interface displayed that my system held more than 166GB of unnecessary files and noted slowdowns in 30 applications. Selecting Continue opened a detailed breakdown of the findings. A second click on Continue led to a promotion for Norton Utilities Ultimate, a separate paid service for cleanup. Closing that window triggered another prompt for a 60-day trial.

This constant promotion of add-ons proved frustrating. Paying for an extra subscription to reach full functionality feels unnecessary, and the pricing adds up quickly. After the trial period the cost reaches 45.73 dollars for the rest of the first year, then rises to 70 dollars annually on top of the base Norton fee.

For a premium suite, the presence of multiple locked features behind additional payments stands out as the main drawback.

Scanning tools

The scanning capabilities represent one of Norton's strongest points, delivering a wide range of options. Standard Quick Scan and Full Scan are available, along with Smart Scan for privacy and performance checks and Targeted Scan for specific items. The Startup Scan option checks for hidden threats during the Windows startup sequence. Running this scan located a concealed Trojan within 15 minutes that had gone undetected by Windows Defender and by Malwarebytes in prior tests.

Below the scan options sits Scam Protection, a set of tools designed to block online scams and phishing attempts. During use it reliably intercepted threats and issued warnings about risky sites. This area also includes specialized functions such as Deepfake Protection, which examines video and audio content to identify AI-generated material.

Norton includes its own AI assistant named Genie that handles cybersecurity questions and reviews suspicious messages or links. The tool proved dependable in tests, correctly identifying multiple spam emails and explaining the nature of each scam.

Performance

Norton proved highly effective at stopping threats that bypassed browser protections and ISP filters. Independent data from MRG Effitas supports these observations. The June 2026 Consumer Assessment report placed Norton among top performers with a 98 percent malware block rate and zero false positives. It recorded a 0.33 percent miss rate and earned Level 2 certification. While Malwarebytes achieved full detection in the same tests, the difference remains minor for everyday users. Overall, Norton delivers reliable year-round protection.

Buying advice

Norton Antivirus offers several personal plans. Norton 360 Deluxe provides the strongest value at 50 dollars for the first year, then 125 dollars per year afterward. The Standard plan starts at 40 dollars for the first year then 95 dollars, while Select Plus begins at 100 dollars then 190 dollars.

Recommendation leans slightly toward alternatives due to the frequency of upgrade prompts that appear after scans and through a dedicated store section. These interruptions feel more prominent than in competing products. Norton does offer advantages, however, including the Startup Scan that catches threats missed elsewhere, plus extras such as a privacy browser, password manager, cloud backup, and startup tools. Users seeking a complete security package will find Norton a capable choice.
