Moneybox stands as Europe’s latest unicorn at roughly £800m or $1.1bn. No outside funding round established that figure. Instead staff sales on London’s emerging private market set the mark.

The British savings and investing platform has now crossed the unicorn threshold. It assigned itself a valuation near £800m or $1.1bn according to initial reports. The milestone matters yet the method stands out even more.

This move does not involve new capital. Long-term team members will offload as much as £45m in shares and that transaction determines the price. The process takes place on the London Stock Exchange’s fresh Private Securities Market.

How Pisces Operates

The platform follows a government structure known as Pisces or the Private Intermittent Securities and Capital Exchange System. It allows private firms to run limited permissioned trading sessions. Employees and early supporters gain liquidity options without the expense or reporting burden of a traditional IPO.

Moneybox routes its offering through Crowdcube at a set price. Staff sales begin first followed by an auction later in July. Participation stays invite-only and the company decides buyer access.

The firm described the step as pioneering. Co-founder and executive chair Ben Stanway noted that PISCES marks a key advance for UK markets and that Moneybox is proud to help show its value for ambitious private firms.

A Valuation With Limits

One important detail deserves mention. Standard unicorn figures arise from outside investors competing in a funding round. This price stems from an internal sale on a platform with limited activity and no prior public pricing record.

It remains unclear whether the level would hold in a genuine capital raise. That question applies to any firm using the new system.

The core operations remain solid. Launched in 2016 by Ben Stanway and Charlie Mortimer the app now counts over 1.9 million users and manages more than £23bn in assets. Revenue exceeded £115m last year with a third consecutive profit. The new £800m figure reflects roughly 45 percent growth from the prior valuation set in October 2024.

London’s Effort to Retain Talent

The wider context involves London’s push to retain successful tech companies. For years leading British firms have noted that remaining private limits staff and investor exits while listing locally offers thin demand or pushes firms toward New York. Pisces offers a middle path with domestic liquidity.

Moneybox is not alone in testing the approach. Wayve completed an $85m tender at an $8.5bn valuation. The exchange has also engaged Revolut which considers a secondary at $115bn along with OakNorth. Klarna and Monzo remain large and private with investors seeking options.

London seeks to learn whether Pisces serves as a genuine listing alternative or merely postpones an IPO. Moneybox provides one of the early data points that will shape that outcome.
