In the previous year, the 13-inch Surface Laptop from Microsoft stood out as a top choice among slim Windows notebooks for me. Priced at $900, it offered an appealing option for those seeking MacBook Air-style construction and longevity on battery in the Windows ecosystem. I even persuaded my sister to purchase one during a discount.

Yet times have shifted. Due to widespread memory limitations, that identical model now carries a $950 price tag while delivering only half the previous RAM allocation at 8GB. The exterior hardware remains impressive, but internal capabilities have changed noticeably.

It has been years since our evaluations included a Windows notebook equipped with such minimal memory. We have long emphasized that 8GB falls short for modern needs. Still, this represents Microsoft hardware paired with Microsoft software, raising the possibility of adequate results.

Those hopes did not hold up.

Positive aspects noted previously about the hardware continue to apply: The keyboard delivers satisfying feedback, the trackpad performs excellently (surpassed only by fully clickable surfaces), the camera produces clear images, and battery endurance remains strong at around 10 hours. The processor, an eight-core Snapdragon X Plus, closely matches last year's version with a modest increase in peak clock speed. Previously it handled basic Lightroom Classic edits capably, but that unit included 16GB of memory, which proves significant here.

Basic browsing and streaming worked adequately most of the time, yet everyday tasks occasionally exceeded limits. During a Microsoft Teams session via the dedicated app, a short video stream from the host caused multi-second pauses. Roughly 10 Chrome tabs spanned two virtual desktops alongside Slack and Signal, without cameras active.

Similar brief pauses occurred multiple times daily even during lighter activities like editing Google Docs without background calls or media. Frequency averaged a couple instances per day, which remains disruptive.

Build quality and tactile feel stay excellent.

Task Manager monitoring revealed near-constant usage around 6.7GB out of 7.6GB available. Post-reboot with minimal startup items, Windows consumed 4.2GB, near the official minimum for Windows 11 and leaving scant margin. Restricting to six Chrome tabs, disabling Signal, and avoiding virtual desktops held usage near 5.5GB.

Light workloads remain manageable under careful limits. Yet constant vigilance over open applications and tabs feels unwarranted on a new $950 device. Early limitations also raise questions about longevity over several years.

Similar memory concerns apply to the MacBook Neo with its 8GB allocation. However macOS manages resources more efficiently, and testing showed the Neo sustaining heavier multitasking. It lacks the longevity of a MacBook Air yet undercuts the Surface Laptop by $250 even after recent adjustments.

Microsoft has stated priorities around enhancing Windows 11 efficiency and stability on budget hardware to rival the Neo. Returning to 8GB as baseline for Windows notebooks requires substantial additional effort. The irony stands out given Microsoft's role in driving current memory demands through AI initiatives. Flagship Surface devices appear affected, which remains disappointing.

No Windows notebook with merely 8GB has undergone review here in over three years. This Surface Laptop marks the start of a trend. Computex announcements included upcoming 8GB models from Dell, Acer, and Asus. With shortages expected to persist, entry-level options will increasingly feature reduced memory.

If Microsoft cannot optimize its own platform effectively on 8GB, other manufacturers face steeper challenges. 8GB does not suffice for Windows notebooks in 2026. Without meaningful reductions in Windows 11 overhead, options include upgrading to 16GB configurations such as the $1,150 Surface Laptop variant, selecting from other brands with better availability, checking certified refurbished units, or considering a MacBook Neo instead.

Further increases remain possible. Today's $950 8GB model could become next year's $1,050 version or higher thereafter.

This reflects the current state of personal computing. The 13-inch Surface Laptop once balanced features against price effectively. Current base configurations deliver reduced value at increased cost. Memory constraints have shifted the terms, with potential for further decline.
