Microsoft ended official support for Office 2019 on Mac in October 2023. The apps continued to run normally at first, so many users paid little attention. That situation is changing fast. Beginning July 13, the Office 2019 apps for Mac will stop allowing edits, saves, or new file creation, and the company has no plans to intervene.

The problem traces back to an expiring security certificate used to check licenses. Microsoft updated the certificate and applied it to every other Office edition, yet Office 2019 for Mac received no such update.

Is Microsoft pushing users to upgrade?

A company spokesperson explained to CNN that no update path exists for an unsupported product, so the renewed certificate cannot be applied. The explanation falls short for many observers, since adding the certificate would require little engineering effort. Adding to the irritation, Microsoft quietly deleted an earlier statement from its site that promised the software would keep working.

Office 2019 was marketed as a one-time purchase. Many users kept it because they wanted the straightforward Word, Excel, and PowerPoint tools without the extra AI features now bundled in newer releases. Since basic functions met their needs, they saw no reason to move to subscription plans. Microsoft is now steering those users toward newer editions or its ongoing subscription service.

What choices remain?

Users who need continued editing access face two main routes. They can sign up for Microsoft 365 to receive the newest apps on as many as five devices. Alternatively, they can purchase Office Home 2024 for Mac or Office Home and Business 2024 for Mac as a single payment, though that version is limited to one Mac.

These tactics prompted some people to switch to Apple Numbers, Pages, and Keynote, which are included free with Macs. Others still require Microsoft compatibility for work and must accept the cost of moving to a current version.
