Meta's intense drive toward artificial intelligence faces mounting opposition from an unexpected source: its own workforce.

A WIRED report indicates that internal frustration at Meta has intensified after multiple AI-related reorganizations, job cuts, and updated workplace rules. Tensions surfaced publicly when an employee disrupted a company livestream with a profanity-filled outburst aimed at AI leaders, startling thousands of colleagues tuned in.

The event appears tied to wider issues within the firm. Over recent months Meta has shifted significant portions of staff toward artificial intelligence efforts, forming new groups focused on refining and assessing AI models. At the same time the company has poured resources into its AI goals while reshaping other areas and trimming positions.

One disputed move involves the Applied AI group, said to include about 6,500 engineers and product managers. Staff members told WIRED the tasks often feel repetitive and removed from their original roles, with many now generating coding tests and scenarios to train AI systems instead of creating customer-facing products.

AI Goals Clash with Worker Satisfaction

Discontent reaches beyond one group.

The report notes that Meta's AI restructuring overlapped with layoffs impacting around 10 percent of employees, or roughly 8,000 people. Across divisions workers describe morale as unusually low while adjusting to fresh priorities and heavier demands.

A further point of contention is Meta's plan to gather employee activity data for AI training. Over 1,600 staff signed a petition against a system tracking clicks and keystrokes on work devices. After the response Meta modified the program to let employees pause collection briefly and seek exemptions in select situations.

Even top leaders have noted the strain. In an internal session Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox called the current climate difficult and brutal, likening operations to a marathon in harsh weather. CEO Mark Zuckerberg conceded in a memo that errors occurred during restructuring and pledged more consistency ahead.
