I was drafting another Optimizer piece this week when news broke that Pete Hegseth plans to push testosterone optimization across the U.S. military.

The message arrived via an X post, as expected. It declared, "The High-T Department of War." A two-minute, 30-second clip followed. Pressing play turned my mood into that viral image of a wailing feline.

"We have a sacred duty to maintain that advantage, which is why we must constantly look for ways to optimize your performance, your resilience, and your long-term health," Hegseth tells America's service members before unveiling a required yearly test for testosterone shortfalls in those over 30. Younger personnel may request it voluntarily. Those diagnosed can choose testosterone replacement therapy without obligation. The New York Times noted the program will extend to women as well.

"This initiative, it's not about artificial enhancement. It's about restoring and optimizing your natural capabilities, protecting your longevity, and ensuring you have the biological foundation required to sustain the fight," Hegseth continues. "As we know, the modern battlefield is brutal and unrelenting. It requires and demands maximum psychological and mental readiness. And by addressing these health markers early, we're keeping you on the leading edge of lethality..."

If that announcement does not scream for an Optimizer breakdown of how testosterone fits into today's wellness schemes, nothing does.

The MAHA movement and wider manosphere interest in testosterone is hardly fresh. Like most health trends, it rests on real science. After age 30, men's testosterone typically drops roughly one percent annually. Sperm counts and quality have fallen versus earlier generations, sparking alarm among biohackers who view fertility as a health barometer. Overall male testosterone has dropped by half over five decades, driving prescriptions from under one million in 2000 to 12 million by 2025, per The NYT.

Beyond fertility concerns, true testosterone deficiency, or hypogonadism, remains a real medical issue. Clinically it means levels below 300 ng/dL and usually appears later in life. A reading of 350 ng/dL might seem low to enthusiasts yet falls short of diagnosis. The Endocrine Society estimates it affects about 35 percent of men past 45 and 30 to 50 percent of those with type 2 diabetes or obesity. Most service members exit active duty by 42 and already follow strict fitness standards. Symptoms include reduced sperm production, erectile issues, low drive, tiredness, mood changes, and muscle decline. Outside medicine, added testosterone has long aided muscle gain, bone strength, and workout recovery in gyms and sports.

Given these facts, it follows that biohackers and manosphere voices push supplementation. This explains why RFK Jr. labels the "male fertility crisis" an "existential problem," why Clavicular began TRT at 14, why Bryan Johnson chills his testes in the sauna, and why 91 percent of Enhanced Games athletes use some testosterone form. Influencers like Joe Rogan and Andrew Huberman promote TRT as a youth restorer. Blend the data with cultural emphasis on masculinity and Hegseth's screening plan makes sense.

Yet closer inspection of what Hegseth expects TRT to deliver for troops reveals cracks in the argument.

He frames the effort around long-term health, though physicians remain doubtful. Many biohackers and tech optimizers are actually quitting testosterone over those very worries.

Consider the new Silicon Valley craze of sperm racing. Instead of comparing physiques, participants submit samples to race on lab tracks. The trend has prompted some to notice that TRT can impair sperm production and fertility. Earlier this week I attended a crowded bitcoin bar event where peptide advocate Julius Ritter discussed his regimen and joked about halting TRT after learning his sample placed last despite size. Clavicular likewise paused treatment to improve his counts.

Exogenous testosterone signals the body to stop its own production, which disrupts supporting hormones for sperm health. The impact is often reversible, yet for service members in prime family-forming years it may prove unwise.

Claims that testosterone turns anyone into a superior athlete remain contested. It can support muscle growth and faster recovery over time, but countless elements determine elite performance. A sedentary person on TRT will not become a top competitor without training, genetics, diet, and gear. Even gifted athletes may find extra bulk hinders results, as seen when James Magnussen bulked heavily before the Enhanced Games and finished last in his events. Hegseth has not clarified the exact military goal beyond a vague "biological foundation."

Details on diagnosis methods are also missing. The American Urological Association's 2024 guidelines require two separate tests plus symptoms because levels vary daily. Patients must learn TRT may not boost cognition, energy, or life quality. Studies show little proof it acts as a youth elixir. Still, up to a third of men on TRT lack clinical need, and many use it without clear medical reason.

Offering screening and therapy to those who truly require it is reasonable. This is not a rebuke of anyone curious about TRT amid current pressures on men.

A core tension in wellness today is whether to supplement for peak performance or only to correct a shortfall. Biohackers favor the first view; most physicians the second. Hegseth's statement tries both angles, mixing talk of natural restoration with buzzwords like longevity and performance.

Wellness thinking often mistakes correlation for causation. Vitamin D shortfalls do not prove sunscreen is harmful. Likewise, lower testosterone does not mean men are weaker overall. Experts point to pollution, obesity, diabetes, stress, and sleep loss as likely causes. Healthy men already sit at normal levels, and chasing an arbitrary optimum through TRT will not create better soldiers or partners.

When facing wellness pitches, the key is spotting what is being sold and asking the right questions. Here that means wondering what Pete Hegseth gains from a high-profile push for a stronger-looking military.
