Apple has spent time testing Rich Communication Services (RCS) for messaging across Android and iOS platforms. First detected in the iOS 26.5 beta, this end-to-end encrypted RCS feature for cross-platform use is now deploying in targeted regions for compatible carriers. It swaps the old SMS system for robust, encrypted exchanges. Broader availability should arrive with the full iOS 26.5 release, and Android users can tap into it through the Google Messages application.

RCS Messaging Gains Encryption Across iOS and Android Platforms

In a Monday blog update, the California tech leader revealed the start of end-to-end encrypted RCS rollout for iPhones on iOS 26.5 beta and Android devices. The capability is in beta form across chosen global areas like Canada and the United States. Android owners need the newest Google Messages app to message iPhones via RCS.

RCS integration means Android-iPhone exchanges get the same safeguards as intra-platform messages. Content from iPhone to Android or the reverse gets encoded, readable solely by the receiving device holding the decryption key.

As a result, only the destination device can decode the text back to readable form, boosting security. Any intercepted data stays gibberish to cybercriminals or unauthorized parties. Google's Android Ecosystem President Sameer Samat noted, "This collaborative push swaps legacy SMS for a safer, more private chatting option regardless of your device."

Apple's carrier support documentation shows RCS in India limited to one provider. Jio offers it, while Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) lag behind on this advanced standard.

In the United States, supported carriers encompass AT&T, Boost Mobile, C Spire, Cellcom Wisconsin, Consumer Cellular, Cox Mobile, Cricket, Family Mobile, FirstNet, T-Mobile USA, Mint Mobile, Next-Tech Wireless, PureTalk, Red Pocket, US Mobile, Verizon, and Xfinity Mobile.
