I've reviewed numerous Linux laptops over the years, with results ranging from disappointing to standout. When a device billed as lightweight and speedy arrives promising a strong mix of performance, features, value, and reliability, it catches my attention - and I hope it delivers.

So when Kubuntu Focus contacted me about the Ar Gen 1, my interest was immediate. Prior tests of their hardware, including the NX Gen 3, had been strong, so expectations ran high for this model.

Upon unboxing the laptop, the weight stood out right away. At 3.13 pounds, this 16-inch machine feels lighter than my 13-inch MacBook Pro when resting on my lap. The chassis has a solid machined-metal build paired with durable polymer key caps, even if it initially seems less premium.

Setup proved refreshingly simple compared to typical MacOS or Windows machines. After powering on the Ar Gen 1 and using the default disk encryption key from the included guide, only a user account setup remained. Within roughly two minutes, the login screen appeared and access was granted. Connecting to Wi-Fi and running initial updates followed without hassle.

The screen is a sharp matte 16-inch LED IPS display running at 165Hz with 2560 x 1600 resolution. It offers 450 nits peak brightness, wide 150-degree viewing angles, an 180-degree lay-flat hinge, full sRGB coverage, and support for two external 4K displays via USB-C and HDMI.

The default KDE Plasma desktop allows extensive customization and themes. A built-in hint widget displays useful keyboard shortcuts for quick launch, system monitoring, and toggles, which helps newcomers. Five desktop icons provide direct access to the Kubuntu site, recommended apps, setup guides, feature overviews, and reference materials.

Performance comes from an Intel Core Ultra X7 358H Panther Lake processor with a 1.9 GHz base clock, 4.8 GHz turbo, 16 cores, 16 threads, and 18 MB cache. Paired with 32 GB of RAM, the system handles multiple applications smoothly without lag. After installing Flatpak to run Ollama from the command line, AI tasks completed without issue while other work continued uninterrupted.

Battery endurance is solid. Starting from a full charge, the unit retained 69 percent after setup, updates, app installs, Ollama use, article writing, and overnight idle time. The 73 WHr cell supports up to 12 hours of light use or 10 hours of typical tasks, with a 90-minute fast-charge option.

Criticism is minimal. The keyboard action feels stiff at first for light typists, though the keys become reassuringly solid with use and feature an appealing font.

ZDNET's buying advice

If shopping for a new laptop, the Ar Gen 1 would rank high on my list. It projects a premium feel, and the light weight combined with the large display makes daily use effortless. A lighter theme would be my first adjustment after purchase. Pricing begins at $1,950, which aligns with other high-end options like the MacBook Pro.
