Several months ago, BYD, the prominent Chinese EV producer, unveiled its flash charging setup capable of moving from 10 percent to 97 percent in nine minutes. Now, Chinese manufacturer Hongqi has topped that achievement.

CarNewsChina indicates that FAW Group's Hongqi marque, working with Lishen Battery, completed charging trials at 25 degrees Celsius for a new ultra-fast charging cell, and the results stand out. The pack advanced from 10 percent to 70 percent state of charge in three minutes and 41 seconds, then reached 97 percent in eight minutes and three seconds.

FAW states the battery hit a peak charging rate of 12C through a high-efficiency ultra-fast charging anode that exceeded earlier constraints. The group also created a tailored electrolyte to reduce the energy barrier for lithium ions traveling inside the cell, and applied a composite carbon coating plus bulk doping to lower internal resistance by 15 percent versus comparable cells, accelerating actual charge transfer.

Managing such high power levels demands robust cooling. FAW's intelligent liquid cooling setup maintains temperature variation across the full pack within 3 degrees Celsius during rapid charging, while a safety-oriented charging approach continuously monitors cell temperature and modifies the power curve dynamically.

Monitoring temperature during fast charging remains critical. Recent tests of BYD's flash-charging system raised battery temperatures to 169.6 degrees Fahrenheit in practical conditions, surpassing advised safety thresholds. Hongqi's battery and its cooling design may handle real-world use more effectively.

Which firms pursue the quickest charge?

Beyond Hongqi and BYD, multiple other firms have entered the fast-charging contest, including CATL and Geely, which have reported their own rapid figures. It appears no EV maker wishes to lag in charging speed, and the rivalry continues to intensify.
