During the Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung presented six devices with only one flip-style model among them. This year the Galaxy Z Flip 8 arrives without a companion FE edition unlike earlier launches. It includes a larger battery and shares certain design refinements with the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra yet skips additions such as an anti-reflective layer and accelerated charging support.

I examined the latest flip phone in person. Although the changes appear modest several meaningful advances stand out compared with the Flip 7. Here is a closer look.

Subtle upgrades

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is marginally slimmer and lighter than the prior model. It tips the scale at 180 grams compared with 188 grams on the Flip 7 and measures 13.1 mm when closed plus 6.1 mm when opened. These figures represent only small shifts from the Flip 7 measurements of 13.7 mm and 6.5 mm when folded and unfolded. The device feels familiar in the hand yet opens with noticeably less effort.

Samsung continues to market the Flip 8 toward users who value distinctive style. A refreshed coverscreen experience powered by One UI 9 lets additional applications operate straight from the front display.

Previously users navigated multiple settings steps to activate similar functions through Labs yet FlexWindow now supports expanded information controls and apps on the 4.1-inch AMOLED cover screen that runs at a 120 Hz refresh rate.

Inside the Galaxy Z Flip 8 sits the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor together with 12 GB of RAM and either 256 GB or 512 GB of storage matching the chips found in its Fold counterparts. Certain regions will instead receive Samsung own Exynos 2600 chipset.

The most significant improvement is battery size. Samsung introduces silicon-carbon anode cells for the first time enabling a 4300 mAh cell in the new Galaxy Z Flip 8. Charging remains capped at 25 W wired and 15 W wireless with no 45 W option available.

The misses

When opened the phone presents a 6.5-inch AMOLED panel that retains the 120 Hz variable refresh rate. The crease stays minimal yet the display lacks any anti-reflective treatment. This omission stands out because the same generation Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra models include the coating which improves visibility under bright or direct light.

The camera hardware matches the Flip 7 setup which itself carried over from the Flip 6. A 50 MP primary sensor pairs with a 12 MP ultrawide lens. Samsung notes new software capabilities including Horizontal Lock borrowed from the Galaxy S26 series for steadier video and a FlipShot mode that supplies a mirror preview for quick appearance checks without capturing an image.

Overall the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 ranks as the least compelling of the three foldables introduced today. It refines areas that needed attention yet still misses the anti-reflective coating found on the inner screens of the Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra. Buyers can select Graphite Cream Pink or an online-only Mint finish at a starting price of $1200.
