Google has revealed that eligible third-party Android app stores in the US will gain access to the Play Store app catalogue from July 22 via the new Play Catalog Access Program. The program lets participating marketplaces feature Play Store apps, though all downloads will still occur through Google Play. Google has outlined the eligibility rules, onboarding steps and annual fee for app stores joining the effort. The update is part of the company's wider adjustments to Android app distribution in the US.

Google to Permit US Android App Stores to Feature Play Store Apps

Per a Google support page, participating app stores can list apps from the Google Play catalogue, yet installations will still happen via Google Play under the same conditions as direct Play Store downloads. Google confirmed that its standard Play service fee will remain in place for apps installed through the program.

Google states that only US-based Android app stores registered as organizations qualify for participation. Eligible marketplaces must operate as genuine third-party app stores, secure proper distribution rights and meet Google's standards on privacy, security and intellectual property. Stores must also supply key app details, user controls for installs and updates, customer support and keep their Play catalogue data current.

Google further restricts how participating marketplaces may use the Play catalogue. They can distribute Play catalogue apps only inside the US and must not add extra download charges, monetize installs or share catalogue data with other marketplaces. Google also requires participating stores to keep offering apps outside those available through the program.

To join the program, app store operators must review eligibility rules, submit an enrollment form, accept the service agreement and pay a $5,000 security and policy review fee. Google notes the same fee will apply each year to keep access. After approval, participating app stores can finish remaining onboarding steps in the Play Console before reaching the Play catalogue.

The update follows Google's continued work to meet the court order from its legal case with Epic Games. Prior reports noted the new program would give eligible third-party marketplaces access to the Play catalogue while still routing app downloads through Google Play.
