Google has initiated testing of a fresh feature enabling website proprietors to oversee the display of their material and hyperlinks in the firm's AI-enhanced search functionalities, according to a company blog update released early Wednesday.

The trial grants publishers greater visibility and authority over their presence in AI-based search outcomes, as the tech leader shifts increasingly toward conversational interfaces rather than conventional result listings. During its developer event in May, the firm highlighted updates including an enhanced AI Mode and a dynamic search field that adapts to query context.

This broader move toward AI-driven search has sparked concern among publishers, partly due to worries that audiences may linger on the search platform rather than visiting source sites, even though those outlets supply the underlying data used by the AI tool. Publishers also face restricted awareness of how their material surfaces in AI Overviews or AI Mode outputs.

In the trial beginning this week with a limited set of publishers in the UK, site owners can choose whether their domain contributes to and appears within AI Search.

Sites choosing to opt out will not gain traffic or impressions from generative AI features, noted Mrinalini Loew, general manager of Google Search Ecosystem, in the blog update. This setting will not influence website rankings in standard Google search results beyond the generative AI elements.

Through Google Search Console, site owners will receive expanded details on page appearances in AI Search, covering which pages feature in AI responses across various countries along with impression data.

The company is continuing collaboration with site owners to identify the most useful insights for their planning and will add further metrics in the future, Loew added. Google noted the test starts with UK publishers before expanding worldwide.
