Google Photos now offers users a straightforward method to exit its Gemini-based search feature when a basic keyword search suffices. A fresh toggle appears at the top of the search results page, allowing seamless switching between Ask Photos and traditional search without navigating settings.

This update responds to user feedback from those who activated Ask Photos but sought faster access to classic search, especially when Gemini proved slower or less effective for simple queries.

Reasons Behind the Toggle Addition

Ask Photos excels at handling intricate requests through natural language understanding and image detail searches, such as locating a license plate number. In contrast, classic search performs better for quick lookups of people, locations, objects, dates, or keywords.

Users on Reddit reported issues like irrelevant results, overlooked keyword matches, and lack of easy return to classic search. Some resorted to disabling Ask Photos via Gemini settings.

Google recognized these issues and paused the rollout in June 2025 due to concerns over speed, result quality, and overall experience. It later reinstated Ask Photos with enhancements for handling basic searches more efficiently.

Functionality of the New Toggle

Enabled users will find classic search positioned on the left and Ask Photos on the right. While Google selects the preferred system for each query, switching views requires only a single tap. Classic search can stay active for multiple straightforward searches, though complex queries may revert to Ask Photos automatically.

Those not enrolled in Ask Photos can still use standard search. The toggle may appear for them, but choosing the AI option initiates the signup process. Gemini maintains a key role in Google Photos, yet the new feature eliminates the need to adjust settings for preferring classic search.
