Android Auto users can finally access Google Meet without grabbing their phones, closing a gap that left the service behind its CarPlay version for several months. Drivers gain the ability to view upcoming meetings and reconnect with recent contacts straight from the vehicle screen once their device links to a compatible system.

How the feature operates in vehicles

According to a Workspace Updates post, the addition activates automatically for anyone who already runs Meet on an Android phone, requiring only a single restart of the mobile app to prepare everything. After connection to the head unit, the interface shows two sections that list planned appointments alongside prior conversations available for quick reconnection.

Starting a session activates Meet in a simplified driving mode that turns off video input and removes extras such as messaging, raise hand options, surveys, and questions, resulting in audio focused operation with basic buttons for muting, linking to other Bluetooth devices, and finishing the session. Links created on the spot that lack calendar entries stay hidden from the schedule view, which may limit spontaneous joins from the dashboard.

The option activates by default whenever the app is present on the phone, and Google added no management settings for companies to disable it. Distribution has begun for domains using rapid release, while scheduled release accounts should see it by June 26, covering Workspace customers, individual subscribers, and standard personal accounts alike.

Matching the experience on iPhone

The same audio only Meet setup reached CarPlay in April, so Android Auto now aligns with the rival platform after a delay of nearly three months. Microsoft Teams has offered similar audio support on Android Auto for longer, placing Meet on equal footing with the competing service for commuters who handle calls while traveling.

Those who depend on regular meetings from the road will find the update removes an earlier shortfall that kept Google service behind Apple in vehicle integration.
