Sony along with Santa Monica Studio have now announced God of War Laufey as the next major release in the long-running franchise. Matching earlier leaks the adventure game follows Faye, spouse to Kratos in the Norse saga, on her path into the realm beyond after passing away at the close of God of War released in 2018. God of War Laufey lacks a confirmed launch window yet though Santa Monica indicated a PS5 debut in the coming period.

Santa Monica presented an initial view of God of War Laufey via a continuous 20-minute gameplay segment during the State of Play event on June 2 highlighting the fresh afterlife environment a new lead character in Faye and an entirely revised combat approach centered on swift action.

God of War Laufey tracks the central figure into Everywhen the divine afterlife after her passing in God of War the opening Norse chapter that launched in 2018.

Death was meant to conclude everything yet for Laufey known as Faye a fighter and partner to Kratos a fresh quest begins right away. She wakes in an unfamiliar realm following her rites and learns the safeguards she arranged for Kratos and Atreus now face threats Santa Monica explained on the PlayStation Blog.

To protect her family Faye has to battle across the divine afterlife called Everywhen where fierce deities from varied traditions compete amid a realm rich in perilous sorcery.

God of War Laufey Play Mechanics and Battles

Beyond the lively new setting filled with figures from assorted traditions Laufey refreshes gameplay by emphasizing quicker close-range fights that incorporate aerial sequences reminiscent of Devil May Cry.

Faye moves with greater agility than Kratos allowing double jumps mid-air kicks and rapid aerial strikes followed by powerful slams. Santa Monica noted this style blends the agile motion from the Greek period with the Norse focus on rich environments and character connections.

Odin fixated on a foretold end during Ragnarok constantly sought insight into realms past mortal death Santa Monica added regarding the setup. God of War Laufey examines that idea by asking what occurs to gods after they perish.

The gameplay footage featured two divine opponents for Faye named Sekhmet and Begtse drawn from Egyptian and Buddhist lore. Faye must overcome vengeful entities in Everywhen reveal afterlife secrets and seek a route home. Whether the tale involves reunion with Kratos and Atreus remains unknown though Kratos appeared briefly in the footage.

During her travels Faye partners with Phranque a cosmic cube that contains the primary armament a unique blade linked to an enchanter ribbon called Rue. The demo displayed Faye using the blade against groups of foes with emphasis on mobility. Santa Monica designed the system to heighten speed strength and smooth flow.

Faye shifts easily between ground and air while employing her Golden Hand for both protection and strikes plus her close weapon. The Golden Hand also lets her control enemy spirits by extracting them for direct attacks or hurling them at others. Santa Monica confirmed the shown combat covers only an early area with further details planned later.

Faye receives voice work from Deborah Ann Woll while Jack Quaid provides the voice for Phranque. Ariel Lawrence serves as director. God of War Laufey arrives solely on PS5 in the near term and can already be added to wish lists via the PlayStation Store.
