Amazon users have seen a surge of counterfeit brands on the platform lately. Developer Josh Pigford created an extension named Knockoff that conceals these inauthentic, low-grade items, allowing normal browsing once more.

This tool supports Firefox, Chrome, and Chromium browsers like Edge, Opera, and Brave. It gained rapid popularity after release, achieving many thousands of installs. Pigford shared on X about building it to dim or conceal poor-quality, mass-made fake brands on Amazon, earning significant attention.

It functions in a straightforward manner. After installation, items from suspicious sellers, dropshippers or phony labels get marked and faded, spotlighting trusted names instead. Users can also choose to remove the questionable entries completely from view.

In discussion with 404 Media, Pigford explains that Knockoff builds upon earlier tools like AmazonBrandFilter and Amazon Brand Detector. The add-on operates entirely on the device, needs no login, transmits nothing to external servers and remains free. The code is publicly available on GitHub for review.

So, how well does Knockoff work?

Claims are easy to make, yet real performance matters. I tested Knockoff myself across multiple searches with default options to check its accuracy at spotting junk without extra adjustments.

The process stayed simple. I browsed various items in different sections and observed how effectively it separated known brands from unknowns.

Results proved solid overall. Vacuum searches mostly stayed visible because they featured familiar names such as Shark, Bissell and Dyson. Only scattered entries faded due to missing brand details in the text.

Solar lights triggered more blocks. The tool hid many listings lacking clear names plus entries from Jkimk, Technet, Tonulax and similar all-caps unknowns, while preserving options from established sellers like Brightown, an actual firm located in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Phone cases proved more complex. It correctly flagged Supfine, Dumkery, Hiearcool and others yet also marked Torras, a respected maker stocked at Best Buy that owns thousands of patents worldwide. The all-caps styling triggered the false positive.

Lesser-known yet genuine earbud makers such as Tozo and Linsoul stayed listed as valid, while fake tool brands like Wgge and Horusdy got properly identified. Unrecognized names often receive highlights, and product pages label them as suspected fakes or unknowns.

Knockoff includes a reporting feature for mislabeled entries. Shoppers can mark a flagged item as legitimate or report a wrongly approved brand as junk via the badge. Enabling badges for good brands in settings may be required for full use.

Minor issues remain. The real tool brand Spec Ops appears unrecognized, offering only the junk report option. The GitHub notes that all submissions receive manual review, though details on logging vary by button choice.

Overall, Knockoff offers real value in a marketplace filled with AI content and unchecked third-party goods.

While shopping, the main advantage lies in skipping low-grade copies. Even without a purchase in mind, counting grayed listings across categories can prove both amusing and eye-opening. Default settings worked best, though enabling known-brand badges is advised.

At once, the tool surfaces likely fakes but cannot judge actual product quality. Counterfeit labels frequently pair with fabricated reviews more than genuine ones do.

Choice depends on the item. Basic zip ties for simple tasks may perform adequately from dropshippers at lower cost.

While Knockoff simplifies finding better goods, further refinement and manual checks remain necessary.

Avoid fake brands without the extension

Russell Holly, director of commerce content at CNET, recommends checking the brand beyond Amazon. Random character strings absent from other sites often signal non-manufacturer sellers.

Holly advises focusing on negative reviews, which brands rarely fake, to reveal quality issues behind lower prices.

Support channels also help. Reliance solely on Amazon for issues points to dropshippers lacking direct assistance.

Duplicate products under different names provide another clue. A Broserengy alarm clock, Bluetooth speaker and charger unit matches one from Fansbe in lights, buttons and ports, showing two slight variants of the identical item.
