Apple introduced a new collection of developer resources on Thursday designed to allow vehicle makers to incorporate Apple Maps navigation and mapping features straight into their cars' infotainment platforms.

Known as MapKit for Automotive, the software development kit will first appear with Ford and its upcoming electric vehicle range, beginning with a $30,000 midsize truck planned for release in 2027.

Ford is making a major commitment to its next wave of electric vehicles, which are meant to be affordable and capable while featuring cutting-edge technology. Breaking from its long history, the company adopted a universal EV platform that will form the base for the midsize truck and later models including a sedan, crossover, three-row SUV and small commercial vans.

Elements such as Apple Maps integration might appear secondary next to Ford's choice to employ single-piece aluminum castings for the vehicle, which reduce component count and speed up production.

Yet the Apple Maps integration sits at the core of Ford's strategy to provide more responsive capabilities to owners, including navigation with efficient EV routing and turn-by-turn guidance using natural language.

Drivers can access real-time traffic and incident data, search for locations, and review detailed place information. Notably, Apple MapKit operates natively within the vehicle and functions independently from Apple CarPlay, which projects phone apps onto the central display.

The integration will supply road-level details from Apple Maps to Ford's next-generation BlueCruise hands-free driver assistance system. The enhanced BlueCruise version, due next year, will manage full highway trips including on and off ramps. The firm has indicated the updated system will eventually support point-to-point autonomy similar to Tesla's Full Self-Driving software before advancing to eyes-off operation in 2028.

The companies noted that embedding Apple Maps directly in the vehicle will deliver smarter EV routing with battery preconditioning. This prepares the battery ahead of reaching a charger to shorten charge times by maintaining optimal temperature.

It may also support smart home connections such as opening the garage door and activating lights upon arrival at home.

Although the technology will be available to any automaker, Ford serves as Apple's initial partner in this initiative. The firms have entered a commercial agreement without revealing its specific terms.

Ford highlighted that the Apple integration could benefit its Ford Pro division serving commercial fleet customers. Businesses might use it to guide drivers to job sites or show other fleet vehicles on the map. Such fleet functions become simpler when the mapping platform is built into the vehicle itself.
