UK officials have brought charges against five individuals after a National Crime Agency inquiry into Russian Coms, a prominent caller ID spoofing service exploited by fraudsters for more than 1.8 million deceptive calls.

The charged suspects include Ayoub Sehailia aged 28, Zakkaria Sehailia aged 30, Usman Din aged 30, Denis Ozmus aged 29, and Fadila Salem aged 53, each residing in London.

Accusations cover conspiracy to provide tools linked to fraud, moving or transforming proceeds from crime, and in the case of Zakkaria Sehailia, not responding to a request for phone access codes. The group is set to appear before Westminster Magistrates Court on Friday, August 14.

The NCA noted on Monday that the service began in 2020 as a physical device before shifting to a web application, with both versions promoted and sold to let offenders mask their true numbers by displaying chosen ones from banks, telecom firms or police to steal money and data.

After the agency inquiry, five people now face charges over supplying Russian Coms hardware and software plus handling funds from the alleged sales of those items.

Active since 2020, the service connects to tens of millions in stolen funds impacting around 170,000 victims.

As disclosed by the NCA in March 2024 during the platform shutdown, numerous offenders purchased six-month subscriptions for 1,200 to 1,400 pounds paid in cryptocurrency to access its main features.

Before closure, offenders placed over 1.3 million calls to 500,000 distinct numbers spanning more than 107 nations such as the United Kingdom, United States, New Zealand, Norway and France, with typical victim losses exceeding 9,400 pounds.

Advertised via Telegram, Snapchat and Instagram, Russian Coms offered a web app plus handset with encrypted calls, web phone access, no-logs policy, international dialing, voice alteration, instant device reset and round-the-clock assistance.

Fraudsters relied on the tool to mimic bank numbers and build victim trust before directing transfers to accounts they controlled under claims of prior fraud on the targets accounts.

The shutdown came after three men were detained in Newham, London, with two viewed as key operators and coders. UK and global partners backed by Europol also signaled further steps against platform users. The action formed part of Operation Henhouse, which produced 290 arrests throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
