As wearables have expanded, smartwatches now handle far more than basic tracking, including calls, alerts, payments, and daily tasks. Still, many users seek to avoid constant screen demands and frequent recharging. Screenless fitness trackers are gaining traction as a simpler option. Google joins this category with the Fitbit Air, a compact band focused on health data without interruptions.

The Fitbit Air reached India this month at Rs. 13,999, offering an accessible choice versus Whoop models. Unlike Pixel Watches, it lacks any screen and rests discreetly on the wrist to log heart rate, sleep, exercise, and recovery. Data appears in the Google Health app, which now includes an AI Health Coach using Gemini. Google positions the Air for continuous day-and-night use, aided by its light weight, fabric strap, and seven-day battery claim. Software emphasis includes tailored insights beyond basic counts like steps or calories. Advanced coaching needs a Google Health Premium plan, though a three-month trial comes with purchase.

Google Enhanced Fitbit Air Customisation Beyond Typical Wearables

After testing the Fitbit Air for roughly one week on health tracking, sleep details, activity logs, and the Google Health platform, several strengths stand out alongside areas for software refinement. The review follows.

Google Fitbit Air Introduces Continuous Heart Rate Tracking in India

Google Fitbit Air Design: Minimal Presence as Intended

Opening the Fitbit Air reveals its straightforward minimalism. The device feels nearly invisible due to its tiny size. The core tracker is 5.2 grams, and the full unit with fabric band reaches about 12 grams, far lighter than most smartwatches and especially noticeable during sleep. Design stays basic with a pebble-like module inside a woven band, no buttons or screen, and little visual prominence. It resembles an ordinary fabric wristband more than a tracker, which boosts its appeal.

Google Releases Fitbit Edge With Key Features

The included Performance Loop band uses recycled polyester and elastane with a stainless steel buckle and micro-adjustable closure for precise fit, ensuring steady sensor contact. The woven fabric suits prolonged wear better than some silicone options on standard bands.

The Fitbit Air enables ongoing health monitoring without a display or buttons

Fabric bands can hold moisture after activity or water contact, requiring proper drying. Google provides alternatives like silicone bands for vigorous workouts. Tracker colours include Obsidian, Berry, Lavender, and Fog. The module detaches easily for band swaps.

Without a screen, interaction remains limited. A double-tap triggers a status LED showing white for good charge or red for low. A vibration motor handles silent alerts. Water resistance reaches 50 metres for swimming, though drying after exposure and avoiding soap are advised.

The main design benefit is reduced distraction, with no notifications or interfaces pulling focus. This simplicity aligns well with pure health monitoring goals.

Google Fitbit Air Features: Exploring Google Health Options

Setup involves linking the tracker via its charger and the Google Health app on a nearby phone. Once paired, background collection of activity and health data begins. The Google Health app serves as the hub, merging steps, sleep, heart rate, readiness, cardio load, and other metrics into a vibrant dashboard with larger cards for quick views.

Google Health app delivers in-depth views of sleep, heart-rate variability, readiness, and cardio load

In testing, the dashboard showed daily steps next to readiness and weekly cardio load. Numbers are clear, yet grasping their context takes time. Bottom navigation splits Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health for focused metric review. Supported services and devices can connect, allowing the Air and a Pixel Watch on one account for mixed use.

The standout feature is Google Health Coach via Gemini. Through Premium, it interprets data, proposes workouts, clarifies recovery scores, and builds custom plans. The goal is explaining metric significance rather than just displaying numbers.

Google Health Coach supplies AI-driven insights, though automatic workout detection requires polishing

The concept suits users new to terms like heart-rate variability. Yet coaching needs work, as some suggestions feel broad, and responses are not medical advice, consistent with most wearables.

Google Health Premium launched at Rs. 499 monthly or Rs. 4,999 yearly post-trial. Core tracking, sleep, and key recovery metrics stay free without subscription.

Google Fitbit Air Performance: Strong Tracking With Occasional Estimates

Health tracking ranks among the Air's top strengths. Despite small size, sensors cover continuous heart rate, estimated blood oxygen, skin temperature shifts, and activity. These feed sleep and recovery details in the app. Sleep tracking proved engaging in the first week, automatically detecting nighttime rest and daytime naps without manual starts. One afternoon nap from 1:08 pm to 3:36 pm logged 2 hours 22 minutes, split into 35 minutes deep, 34 minutes REM, and 73 minutes light, plus six minutes awake and 13 minutes restless.

The Performance Loop band allows fine adjustments, and the tracker supports interchangeable straps

This level of detail from a compact unit is notable, with clear stage timing shown. Stages remain estimates without clinical validation for full accuracy.

Another night showed 7 hours 33 minutes rest scoring 82 as Good, with resting heart rate at 61 bpm and HRV at 57ms. These metrics gain value over time for personal trends. Early recovery cards displayed "No range" until more baseline data accumulated.

Heart-rate tracking performed solidly in a 30-minute session averaging 115 bpm with 22 minutes in moderate zone, graphed for intensity review. Precision comparisons to chest straps would require longer validation.

Google Fitbit Air uses a compact tracking module weighing only 5.2 grams

Automatic workout detection needs improvement, sometimes tagging activity as "Maybe: Activity" and prompting type confirmation with suggestions like HIIT or kickboxing. Users can edit sessions, but added steps reduce seamlessness.

Readiness and cardio load add value yet require personal baseline context for interpretation. A short test period limits firm conclusions on consistency. Overall, the Air supplies extensive health data, with Google's next focus on reliability, clarity, and actionable guidance.
