Europe's drive for independent space access now carries a sizable price estimate. The Exploration Company, the Munich startup developing what it describes as the continent's first reusable space capsule, is in discussions to secure at least $300 million, according to the Financial Times.

The financing would place the six-year-old business at a valuation exceeding $2 billion, a number noted by Bloomberg based on the FT coverage from July 26, 2026. Both figures remain tentative. Sources close to the talks noted that the deal is not yet complete, leaving room for adjustments or even cancellation.

Comparisons to Elon Musk's venture are understandable. The Exploration Company is creating Nyx, a reusable capsule positioned as Europe's counterpart to SpaceX's Dragon, intended to transport cargo and later crew to the International Space Station and future commercial platforms. This targets the same segment SpaceX has dominated for years.

Europe currently lacks its own method for returning cargo from orbit, forcing reliance on American and earlier Russian systems. Founded in 2021 by Hélène Huby, previously leading space exploration efforts at Airbus, the company presents Nyx as the solution: a vehicle that launches, returns, and flies multiple times, with crewed flights planned later.

The schedule aligns with upcoming changes. The ISS is set for retirement near 2030, and replacement commercial stations will require reliable transport for supplies and research returns. This is the opportunity The Exploration Company aims to capture.

The moment is competitive for European space efforts. Isar Aerospace, another German launch firm, secured €270 million late last year, and private investment in the sector across the continent has surpassed U.S. levels for the first time. The core argument centers on sovereignty and avoiding dependence on external providers.

Potential backers for the new round include the EU's Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by Swedish group EQT and reportedly close to committing. An EU-connected investor would align with the company's emphasis on European technology supported by European resources.

The Exploration Company already holds momentum. It completed a $160 million Series B in November 2024 led by Balderton Capital and Plural, with participation from French Tech Souveraineté and Germany's DeepTech and Climate Fonds. It reports a contract backlog near $770 million from clients such as Axiom Space, Vast, Starlab, and the European Space Agency.

Full success remains ahead. The latest test, Mission Possible, launched via SpaceX rideshare from Vandenberg Space Force Base on June 24, 2025. The capsule reached orbit, endured reentry, but lost contact shortly before the intended splashdown. The firm labeled it a partial success.

A prior flight, Mission Bikini, launched on the first Ariane 6 in July 2024, but a rocket upper-stage issue left the test article unable to attempt reentry. Two missions have yet to demonstrate the full reusability cycle.

The proposed $300 million round would address this gap by supporting the shift to an operational cargo vehicle. The valuation signals investor confidence in the company's ability to achieve repeated flights and recoveries. The test history, however, shows remaining challenges.

Neither the company nor EQT had issued statements on the discussions at the time of the FT report. Clarity on final size, valuation, and additional investors is expected in the weeks ahead.
